Let’s start with a list of names: Earl Morrall, Joe Namath, Jim Plunkett, Joe Montana, Jim McMahon, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady.  If asked what all these quarterbacks have in common you would promptly reply Super Bowl rings.  You’d be partially correct.  Now let’s add some more names to that list: Randall Cunningham, Dan Marino, Jim Harbaugh, Doug Flutie, John Kitna, Chad Pennington and Michael Vick.  So again the same question but now collectively; what do these two groups of NFL quarterbacks have in common?  Give up?  Here’s a hint, with Alex Smith’s improved play this year he’s got a legitimate shot at joining this group.  If you still haven’t gotten it, all of the aforementioned quarterbacks have earned NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors and San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith has an excellent chance to follow suit in 2011. The NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award has been around since 1972.  It is currently presented by the Professional Football Writers of America to a player who has persevered through injury or a bad year statistically to return to form or even comeback better than ever.  Many football minds out there have already given the award for 2011 [...]
