The Bird Cage:
Talented and Underachieving
One of Those Seasons So Far (C.Compton/AJC)
Figured we’d go in a little different direction on this post and analyze what seems to be wrong with this Atlanta Falcons team. Coming of a 13-3 record, an NFC South Title, and the NFC’s #1 seed, the Birds seemed to be poised for another strong year after adding Julio Jones and Ray Edwards in the off-season and keeping most everyone else. 1) A Very Average Football Team
The Falcons are the epitome of average after the midway point of the season. They have been able to beat the basement dwellers (Colts), the below average (Seahawks, Eagles, Panthers) and the slightly above average (Lions) and that’s it. Their combined record of opponents they have beaten comes to 14 – 32 (30.4% win). They have lost to every elite team (Packers, Saints), very good team (Bears), and even found a way to lose to a now fairly average team (Bucs).
Sure, they’ve

Edwards eager to prove he belongs with Falcons
Ray Edwards longs to prove that the Atlanta Falcons were wise to sign him to a $30 million contract.
With two sacks, five quarterback hits and two fumble recoveries in nine games, Edwards, like many Atlanta fans, is disappointed in his lack of production.

Falcons WR Jones misses practice for 3rd day in row
Atlanta Falcons rookie wide receiver Julio Jones missed a third straight day of practice Friday and has been listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Tennessee.
Jones aggravated a hamstring injury in Sunday's game against NFC South rival New Orleans Saints. He had missed two games earlier in the season with an injury to his left hamstring.

Ray Edwards seeks improvement
The Falcons signed Ray Edwards to a five-year, 30 million contract in the offseason, the team's major free-agent acquisition.
The defensive end was added to bolster the team's pass rush in combination with John Abraham.

Julio Jones Misses Practice. Start In Jeopardy
D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter reports that Falcons receiver Julio Jones missed Wednesday’s practice, but did work with the athletic performance staff.

No practice for Julio Jones on Friday
The chances of Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones playing against the Titans on Sunday are looking bleaker after Jones missed practice on Friday. He’s officially listed as questionable after reinjuring his hamstring in last week’s loss to the Saints, but it seems unwise to push him back onto the field so quickly if the team…
Julio Jones Doesn’t Practice
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones missed practice on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury that he aggravated on Sunday against the Saints. Right now, I highly doubt that Jones will be able to play this week against the Titans. I would expect to see Harry Douglas once again fill in for him.
Julio Jones misses practice again
A week after returning from a hamstring injury with a breakout game against the Colts, Falcons receiver Julio Jones aggravated the injury against the Saints. He hasn’t practiced on Wednesday or Thursday of this week, decreasing the likelihood that he’ll be available for Sunday’s game against the Titans. The sixth pick in the 2011 draft,…

Baker could return this week, Jones might not
The Falcons released their injury report this week, and Sam Baker was listed as questionable after limited participation in all three days of practice. NFL 2011: A Rookie Odyssey
Every year for the last seven years I have signed up for fantasy football with ESPN. In each of those years I have added yet another team to the list, and one of them has been a team called Rookie Magic. Yes, it’s exactly what you think it is. The entire team, from top to bottom is made up of the rookies from that season’s class, minus the D/ST spot of course. In five of the...
