The Free Agency period in the NFL is producing some notable departures so far across the league. One Cincinnati Bengals players departure in particular sticks out.

Offensive Tackle Andrew Whitworth announced he’s taking his talents to La-La-Land on Thursday. Joining the Los Angeles Rams after a decade with the Bengals. Leaving many Bengals fans sad to see Whitworth go, yet wishing him well. In my view aside from the money and the location, I don’t understand this move. Sure the money is great, Whitworth agreed to a three year $36 million contract.

Andrew Whitworth will get a guaranteed $15 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. A compelling enough reason for Whitworth to agree to the deal. Plus, he gets to move to the sunshine of Southern California. Where he’ll get to see the stars and massive traffic jams. Aside from all of that, if I were in Whitworth’s shoes I would’ve hesitated at taking this deal.

He’s going from a Bengals team that while lousy last year; still has the potential to be a contender. Judging from what we’ve seen so far from the Rams in Los Angeles and their last few years in St.Louis. One could say that the Rams don’t look like a team that will be in the NFL Playoffs in the near future. This is a deal that will benefit Andrew Whitworth financially. While the Los Angeles Rams pick up someone that could boost their offensive line.

Yet how much getting Whitworth will help the Rams remains to be seen. For the Bengals this leaves an absence to fill in the offensive line. A position they Bengals were in last year courtesy of free agency. After losing Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones during the free agency period last year. Now they’ll need to find a way to fill the shoes Whitworth’s leaving behind.

The Bengals also lost guard Kevin Zeitler to the Cleveland Browns. Joining the Browns after signing to a five year deal worth $60 million. On a good note for the Bengals, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick signed to a five year deal to stay in Cincinnati.
