To answer this opening question bluntly, he’s a tight end, which the Giants desperately need.

Big Blue signed Martellus Bennett to a one-year, $2.5 million contract on March 14. For the past four seasons, Bennett has been Jason Witten’s backup for the Dallas Cowboys.

He told ESPN that he is eager to compete for the starting role for the G-Men.

As we know, Giants tight ends Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum both suffered torn ACL’s in the Super Bowl and will likely be out most of next season. As a result, tight end became a position of need very quickly.

Former Giants Kevin Boss and Jeremy Shockey had been rumored to be possible replacements, but Boss recently signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and Shockey is already running his mouth.

Even after signing Bennett, the Giants will still likely explore drafting a tight end with the No. 32 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Bennett is only 25 years old, so this could be a long-term match if the signing pans out. He stands at six-feet, six-inches and 270 pounds, so he would be a big target for Eli Manning.

It’s nice to see the Super Bowl Champions are hard at work trying to fill the holes of the roster in gearing up for another potential Super Bowl run.
