Who should start for Raiders if Jimmy Garoppolo is sidelined with back injury?

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a back injury against the New England Patriots, leaving Brian Hoyer and Aidan O'Connell as the starting options if Jimmy G. can't play against the Chicago Bears.

Garoppolo could miss a game, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, meaning it's the next man up for Vegas. In the 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots Sunday, Hoyer stepped up. He completed 6-of-10 passes for 102 yards, including a 48-yarder to rookie wide receiver Tre Tucker, the team's longest play from scrimmage this season.

The 15-year veteran attributed his decent showing to his experience under Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels. Hoyer played under McDaniels for seven seasons in New England while he served as Patriots offensive coordinator.

"I've pretty much seen all situations when it comes to the game of football," Hoyer said in a postgame news conference. "Regardless of the situation, obviously, I've played in this offense for a long time."

However, Hoyer is 38 and 16-24 in his career as a starter. O'Connell, 25, has more upside. The rookie out of Purdue started in a Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, completing 24-of-39 passes for 238 yards and an interception.

Despite O'Connell's promise, McDaniels might roll with Hoyer due to his experience and ability to avoid turnovers.

"Knowing the situation and with the way our defense is playing, I wasn't going to let them touch the ball," Hoyer said. "Unfortunately, it got a little close there at the end, but they came up big again."

The Raiders defense has excelled over the past two games, only allowing 30 points and forcing four turnovers. A  QB who takes care of the ball will help the unit avoid unfavorable situations.

While Hoyer isn't a star, he's a serviceable backup and the better choice if Jimmy G. misses his second game this season.
