In a surprise move this evening, the Miami Dolphins released cornerback Richard Marshall.  It’s a surprising move because Marshall was splitting 1st team snaps with Dmitri Patterson, opposite Brent Grimes.  It’s a surprising move because the Dolphins had 3 starting caliber cornerbacks, which is important in a pass-happy NFL.  It’s a surprising move because the Dolphins have been trying to gear up to stop Tom Brady…..and releasing a starting caliber cornerback and replacing him with a rookie or a Nolan Carroll does not help you stop Tom Brady. Photo Courtesy of Dolphins.com Marshall was signed prior to the 2012 season and played a total of 4 games for the Dolphins before being placed on injured reserve.  The move saves the Dolphins roughly $4.6 million and effectively ends the battle for the starting corner spot opposite of Grimes.  Dmitri Patterson has won and now must play up to the potential the Dolphins have seen in him. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m kind of stunned by this news.  I mean, it’s not like the Dolphins were up against the cap and needed relief.  They had $16 million to spend and this move gives them $20 million.  The Dolphins are in the business of keeping good football players.  I’m not saying Marshall would have been a Pro Bowler this year, but right now he’s more reliable than any 3rd cornerback the Dolphins have.  Will Davis, who has been an interception machine in the preseason, is a rookie and is inconsistent.  We all have a pretty good idea what Nolan Carroll is by now.  He’s a good special teams player, but questionable at best, in coverage. I would’ve been fine with the Dolphins trading Marshall for another talented player that could contribute this season…..Maybe for, oh I don’t know….a tight end??   But to cut him outright, a week before the roster needs to cut down to 75?  It just doesn’t make sense.  I’m wondering if there isn’t some type of legal matter or NFL rules matter that we don’t know about.  It just doesn’t add up. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything new.  In the meantime, let us know what you think about this move in the comment section below.
