Why QB Russell Wilson's growing confidence in new offense gives Broncos cautious optimism

After a shaky preseason debut, quarterback Russell Wilson promises the Broncos' new offense is about to click.

"The biggest thing is trying to get the ball to our playmakers' hands, in whatever way that is," Wilson said in a Wednesday news conference. "We've got a lot of ways to do that. Coach [Sean] Payton really knows how to do that and how to dial it up. It's all coming together."

In an 18-17 loss to Arizona, the Broncos' first-team offense, which ranked last in points scored last season, faltered early. Their first three drives yielded zero points, and Wilson was under duress due to inconsistent pass protection. The unit didn't score until midway through the second quarter.

Yet, there were positives. When Wilson had time, he looked comfortable in Payton's system, completing 7-of-13 passes for 93 yards and a 102.4 passer rating. Also, Jerry Jeudy flashed No. 1 wideout potential, registering two receptions for 40 yards and a TD.

The starters will receive more snaps in the second preseason game against the 49ers on Saturday, allowing them to get a better grip on Payton's offensive philosophy.

"It's kind of like that 10,000-hour thing. More and more reps," Wilson said. "We've got a lot of reps this offseason together, here at practice and also off the field as well. All that film study we're doing together is really helping as well."

Payton is a Super Bowl champion and an offensive mastermind, so the offense should start to turn the corner as Wilson and his teammates become more familiar with it.

The 34-year-old's comments should give Broncos fans cautious optimism since it signals he understands the system, which could turn the franchise around after a dreadful 5-12 season in 2022.
