A section at a Chiefs game.

Much debate has been circling for some time on whether the National Football League should shorten the preseason from four games down to two. With dropping two games from it’s preseason schedule, the NFL would also want to add two games to the regular season. But the NFL should leave it just the way it is, at least for now.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, teams are required to bring in 90 players to training camp. Before the roster limit of 53 players is reached, lots of evaluating has to go on in the film room by coaches to see who will make the regular season rosters. On top of the 37 additional players that fight for jobs during preseason, starters and regular backups need live game action during the preseason as well and not just practicing against eachother. So how will the starters, reserves, and players on the bubble all get playing time with just two preseason games?

They can’t.

Another issue would be the addition of two regular season games with the removal of two games in preseason. If the NFL were to add games to the regular season, players would want their contracts re-worked to reflect that of 18 games. And how will prior records, stats, etc. look? During an 18 game season, records can be broken and history can be easily rewrtten as it gives players two more games to be placed in the history books of the NFL. Which will undoubtedly upset and cause lots of debate with former players.

Well what about the fan?

Good question, but only the NFL can answer that. At prices for preseason games the same amount as regular season, fans cause an uproar each year when the product on the field during preseason does not match the value of a ticket. Whether or not the NFL has considered a change in their pricing plans for preseason games has not been disclosed. But one can not argue with the fan on this one as the regulars get approximtaely five quarters worth of playing time throughout the entire preseason.

A lot of work gets put in during preseason for every team in the NFL. However, the bigger concern is not so much the amount of games a team gets, but the lack of excitement the fan feels from attending/watching a preseason game.

So should the amount of preseason and regular season games be adjusted?

No.

But something should be done for the NFL fan.
