The grumblings swirling around the Philadelphia Eagles' spiraling season and the necessity to bench Michael Vick are not only premature, but just completely outrageous. No offense to rookie Nick Foles, but there is just absolutely NO chance Foles gives the Eagles a better chance to win over Vick.Anyone who legitimately is advocating for this position clearly hasn’t watched enough of the Eagles playing this year, as it is clear Vick is not the most glaring problem. The retirement of Tra Thomas coupled with season-ending injuries to center Jason Kelce as well as left tackle Jason Peters leaves the Eagles' offense line in shambles.Vick’s mobility is an asset (of course the Eagles don’t utilize it) given the current Eagles' porous offensive line. Substituting in an unproven rookie (Foles) over an elite player in Vick is not only a knee-jerk reaction, it just is not a sound football move.Vick has been sacked over 20 times through Week 8 of this season (seven games) but even more alarming is the fact that Vick has been hit almost 60 times! That’s more than eight per game. With such a large number of hits on their quarterback the Eagles should not be surprised that he has turned the ball over at such a staggering clip. Not condoning his lack of ball security, it certainly needs to get better, which it did in Week 8 vs Atlanta. It is no secret that Michael Vick has underperformed in 2012 and he certainly has plenty of room for improvement to justify his massive $100 million contract ($12.5 in 2012). In Week 8 against a Falcons defense that is among the league leaders in turnovers forced, Vick did not turn the ball over once. He is still the electrifying player from 2010 that Eagles fan remember, but the Eagles need to start putting him in better positions to succeed.By establishing a running game with LeSean McCoy (16 attempts in Week 8) and giving Vick better protection through bootlegs and play-action passes, it will allow for more space and the Eagles' athleticism on the edge to be utilized. All that being said, Vick as the signal caller under center still gives the Eagles (and probably at least 25 other NFL teams) the best chance to win. Deciding to make a quarterback change now would not only saddle the Eagles with little-to-no chance of making the playoffs, but it was also stunt their long-term answer at QB’s ability (Foles) to mature and grow in their offense, as he would be getting hit at least 10+ times per game.Look for Michael Vick and the Eagles to be flying high as they take on another one of the league’s most underwhelming defenses in New Orleans on Monday Night Football in Week 9.If the Eagles lose this one, they will have solidified MUCH bigger problems than a pseudo-quarterback controversy.
