This argument seems to permeate throughout Bears circles, on Bears message boards on my twitter feed that it will be an OT selected at 19.  I go over and over the reasoning behind why the Bears won't draft an offensive tackle at 19 but it never seems to sink in.  The argument or points in the argument typically goes something like this

J'Marcus Webb sucks the Bears need to draft an offensive tackle

He allowed Jared Allen to give up three sacks

Pro Football Focus says Webb allowed 14 sacks on the season

Pro Football Focus says Webb was the second worst LT in the NFL

Webb gets beat like a rented mule

Webb is a turn style

Anyway you get the idea I think I've covered the majority of the arguments.  What's lacking in those arguments however are a few points.  My points which I'll cover primarily blame Mike Martz which a lot of fans won't like because fans liked Martz.

Each and every time Mike Martz has been a play caller in the NFL, except on his offenses have ranked in the bottom five of the NFL in sacks allowed.  Seven step drops caused nearly 1/3 of all of the sacks within the  Bears' offense.  Mike Martz's offense does not allow for an audible at the line of scrimmage or a change in blocking assignments you run the play that is called even if it means getting your QB killed.

Prime examples of this are numerous third and short to medium play calls that Martz called for a seven step drop and in turn didn't keep in enough players to block the amount of rushers coming off the edge.  This typically to Cutler throwing the ball away in a flailing fashion in order not to get sacked or getting sacked anyway.

Numerous times Martz would not leave enough players in to block specifically in the game against the blitz happy Saints.

When you offensive scheme is essentially designed around concepts that have been schemed against since the 1970s you're going to get your QB killed.

Other point, the wide receivers who couldn't win the physical battles off the line of scrimmage to get open on the hot reads.  The inability to create separation to catch the ball when Cutler was getting blitzed.  This too was a factor in all the sacks, this too will change with the addition of a free agent receiver.

Don't get me wrong, Webb was and is bad he has struggled mightily but he isn't as bad as Omiyale was or as bad as others before him who played in far better schemes designed to protect the QB.

Mike Martz was fired in the middle of the season with the San Francisco 49ers by Mike Singletary because he refused to adjust his offense, because he wouldn't run the ball more to Singletary's liking.  Singletary's background is like Lovie's, a ball control run based offense opposite of Martz's style.

Webb will get better simply because he no longer has to block in Martz's scheme.  The refusal to include audibles within the offensive scheme was absolutely insane.  This is why you heard Cutler at one point tell Martz in simple terms to F-off.

Defeating the blitz comes down to three fundamentals, good communication up front, audibles that allow your QB to get the ball out quickly and receivers who can win the battle off the line of scrimmage within a small window.

Oftentimes Martz's offense did not allow for this and it made Webb and the rest of the OL look a lot worse than it was.
