Reggie Wayne had his seven straight 1000+ receiving yards streak snapped last year thanks to unreliable quarterback play. Entering the season at 33 years of age with a November birthday looming, along with having a rookie quarterback made a return to elite status seem unlikely.
.
Through three games, however, he is averaging 7.7 catches and 98.0 yards per game. He only has one touchdown, but has had at least 71 yards each game. Will Wayne continue to put up big numbers?
.
I don’t see why he wouldn’t. For starters, he’s being targeted a ton. He is on bye this week, but currently leads the league with 40 targets. Only Victor Cruz and Dwayne Bowe join him with more than 35 looks. Clearly Andrew Luck has confidence in Wayne.
.
Speaking of Andrew Luck, he is living up to the expectations. Obviously there will be bumps along the way, as evidenced by his 53.3 completion percentage and 75.4 passer rating, but he has been solid.
.
Luck has topped the 300 yard mark in two out of three games and has thrown a pair of touchdowns the past two weeks. Luck is averaging 282.0 yards per game with five touchdowns to four interceptions.
.
The more he plays the better he should get. Will that mean he looks to Wayne a little less frequently? Perhaps, but he could also connect on a higher percentage of his targets (currently 57.5 percent). I also expect him to find the end zone more frequently.
.
While I don’t think Wayne will maintain his pace for 122 catches for 1568 yards, I do think he will continue to have a very productive year.
