There were more than a few eyebrows raised over the weekend when a report surfaced that the Carolina Panthers brought free agent RB Mike Tolbert in for a visit, prompting speculation that the team could have Jonathan Stewart on the trade block. The Panthers are one of the deepest teams at the running back position. Along with Stewart, the Panthers have DeAngelo Williams and Mike Goodson under contract for 2012. Goodson finished the year on the injured reserve list for the Carolina Panthers.
If the Panthers do indeed sign free agent running back Mike Tolbert, then it is apparent that Stewart would be the odd man out. Stewart is heading into the final year of his rookie contract and after re-signing DeAngelo Williams to a monster contract last year, it’s unlikely that the Panthers could afford to ink Stewart to a long-term deal next season.
In what has been a slow free agency period at the running back position this season, Stewart would likely generate some trade interes...

The Panthers announced the signing of Mike Tolbert Monday, sparking speculation that they may trade one of their running backs. Carolina already has DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Goodson under contract at the position. Stewart will be a free agent after the season. The agent for free agent running back Mike Tolbert says his client has signed a four-year contract with the Carolina Panthers.
Joel Turner says his client is so excited about joining Carolina that ''he left over $1 million on the table from San Diego - that's how bad he wanted to play there.''
Turner did not release financial terms.

Because linebacker Thomas Davis was willing to give up some money, he got a chance to come back to the Carolina Panthers.
Because left guard Travelle Wharton wouldn't, he went on the market until being signed by Cincinnati.
According to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, the Carolina Panthers have signed running back Mike Tolbert to a four-year deal.
With the addition of Tolbert, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jonathan Stewart ends up being traded, since he’s going into the final year of his current contract.
Tolbert carried the ball 121 times for 490 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2011.

Mike Tolbert is a now a member of the Carolina Panthers, and that makes little sense from the outside.
Well if Mike Tolbert is in who is out?
The Panthers are going to deal Jonathan Stewart or DeAngelo Williams at this point… right? Well, except for the little fact that they don’t want to trade Jonathan Stewart, at least from every report that is out there.
As Jason La Canfora...
