Here is this week’s Chargers mailbag. Feel free to tweet questions to @cover32_SD or use the hashtag #BoltUp32 if you have something you want to ask. @cover32_SD Will the Chargers target Eric Decker in free agency and reunite him with McCoy? — John Tomczak (@Coach_JMT) January 15, 2014 That is a good question, John. With Keenan Allen breaking out, it would appear like adding a stud wide receiver across from him would make this offense damn-near unstoppable. However, we have to remember that during the Chargers five-game winning streak at the end of the season, we saw a lot of 12 personnel. This formation included two tight ends, Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green, and focused on the running game. We also can’t forget that Danario Alexander and Malcolm Floyd will be returning. These two big-bodied receivers will be a nice compliment to Allen. I think the free agency money would be better spent on the defensive side of the ball instead of targeting a premier wide receiver. But to your point, the Chargers have to add a playmaker on offense. The biggest thing is offense is missing is a home run hitter. Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead both have the ability to make plays, but rarely are you going to see either take it all the way. Eddie Royal has some of the potential to fill this role, but his injuries have limited his speed in the past few years. My hopes is that the Chargers target someone like De’Anthony Thomas from Oregon. Thomas is a burner and will give this offense a completely different dimension. However, I think Thomas will be a late first rounder/early second rounder. Ideally the Chargers target a wide receiver like Bruce Ellington from South Carolina or Tevin Reese from Baylor in the third round. Both of these players have prototypical slot receiver bodies and will run right around a 4.4. We will see what the Chargers do. After Telesco’s 2013 free agency and draft, I am beyond excited for March and April this year. The cover32 awards for the Chargers on the offensive side of the ball.
