The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award honors excellence on and off the field.

The on the field part of the award is exactly why Vikings safety Madieu Williams will not win the award during the ceremony just prior to Super Bowl XLV.  However, there is no doubt that Williams is deserving of recognition when it comes to his off the field generosity.

Williams is a finalist for the award, along with Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and Bears lineman Israel Idonije.

Williams will not be attending the ceremony for the award because he had previously committed himself to visiting service members in the Persian Gulf and fully intends to honor that commitment.

The NFL.com bio for Williams notes that he achieved a career high of 96 tackles in 2010.  Still, I highly doubt he will be the winner.
