Wing Bowl, the annual day of chicken wing-eating gluttony in Philadelphia, happened this morning at the Wells Fargo Center. James ‘The Bear’ McDonald of Granby, Conn. won the 21st edition of the event by eating 287 wings, knocking out hometown favorite Jonathan Super Squibb. As always, the real show was in the seats of the sold-out arena, where fans began drinking as early as 5 a.m.; some didn’t stop from Thursday night. I started drinking this morning at 4:50 on the subway. #WingBowl — Captain Craiggels(@krondore) February 1, 2013 Not participating this year: Kobayashi, the Japanese eating machine that downed a record 337 wings last year, and Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, who won a record five Wing Bowl titles. Simmons was indicted in New Jersey on cocaine distribution charges last night. Aside from the chicken wing eating contest that pits serious eaters against one another, Wing Bowl usually serves as an exposition for every strip bar in the Philadelphia area. Most bars send a collection of dancers and enlist a porn star or two — Jesse Jane was in attendance this year — to sway the thousands of guys with beer goggles and half hard-ons to come back to their clubs for more of the same, sans the competitive eating part. Philadelphia sports personalities usually make an appearance; the event is the creation of longtime sports talk radio station WIP 94.1-FM. New Eagles’ coach Chip Kelly stopped by this morning to see the human circus of beer, babes and Buffalo wings. “@eagles: #Eagles Coach Chip Kelly pays a special visit to @sportsradiowip‘s #WingBowl…” — Ryan Ruggero (@RyanRugg25) February 1, 2013 Former Flyers’ goaltender Bernie Parent, a staple at Philly sports’ marketing events, was also at the event. Once the contest starts, the rules are simple: you heave, you leave. Eagles long snapper Jon Dorenbos, dressed head-to-toe in white, served as commissioner of the event. He was charged with pointing out the eaters who experienced food reversal, though the arena’s big screen usually captures it. I must mention, a man regurgitated hundreds of wings…three feet in front of me. #wingbowl #birdfood — Strebaleps (@SamiCorrado) February 1, 2013 This morning’s first puker was the contestant from Dallas, whose Cowboys are hated in Philly more than anything else. The start of the competition also ramps up the flashing by the females in the crowd, who by then have consumed enough booze to show their boobs to thousands. why do you guys let me do this terrible shi9t, we flashin everybody out here #wingbowl @kait_with_a_k @mel_is_a_rose #nippletassels — Julie Ann Murray (@droolieann) February 1, 2013 Boobies! #WingBowl — Jim Sauls (@BIGJIMis69) February 1, 2013 That’s Wing Bowl. Not everyone is a fan. Wing Bowl has got to be the biggest gathering of douchebags that Philly puts together. #WingBowl — Jess Smith (@xfreckles4salex) February 1, 2013 You can watch the highlights on WIP’s site.
