He did throw in some stats but really didn't elaborate on each player. I know that most of us want a WR in the draft and I have I gut feeling we will take on relatively early. I seriously doubt we will take a WR in the first round (unless they were REALLY impressed by Sweed or Thomas when they brought them in for a visit). I believe the draft is going to work out like this.
Trading Lito: If we do it on draft day, we will select the best possible corner available. I would like to say we would take Dominque Rodgers Cromartie, but I have a gut feeling that the FO likes Mike Jenkins. If game tape says it all and we disreguard the combine, Mike Jenkins is the best available corner (playmaker/punt returner/cover corner). He seems to have the heighest ceiling of all the available "top 5" cornerbacks and has no character issues. If we don't trade Lito, our priority will shift to the top rated DE/OL. The only DE that might interest the FO at pick #19 would probably be Floridas Derrick Harvey. He's basically Javon Kearse 2.0. Calias Campbell will also be available, but I think the remaining 2 OL ( Jeff Otah/Chris Williams) will be rated higher on the Eagles draft board. I personally would LOVE Branden Albert as our 1st round selection, but I think his stock may have risen too high for us to sit at 19 and get him (especially if the Dolphins take Jake Long with the #1 overall pick b/c this would put a premium on OL from that point on).
My take on WR situation:
I think we will either trade up in round 2 to aquire one of the top WR or aquire a high enough pick in the 2nd round (trading Lito) that we will be able to aquire FS Kenny Phillips and then a WR at pick 49. So who best fits our needs? If we are really looking for a WR to fit our "system" I believe the best WR would be Limas Sweed or Devin Thomas. If you are looking for consistency and someone who is a true west coast reciever, Limas Sweed is your man. If you are looking for the best possible reciever in the draft based on speculation (1 year phenom) it's Devin Thomas. After watching some game tape on both players, Im still sold that Sweed is our best option. He's a decent sized target (6'4) who catches the ball naturally with his hands and could be a good red zone threat. He is the prototypical west coast reciever and probably fits our biggest WR Need. I think his injury issues are a thing of the past (might fall in our favor since his stock has dropped a little b/c of the wrist injury) so this might be a blessing in disguise. I don't see him as a superstar, but a good player who we can trust for years. Devin Thomas on the other hand is a multi threat player who can return kicks and posses the speed and shifty moves of a Steve Smith (the Carolina Smith that is) and could possibly be a superstar in the league. He fights for the ball, has great lateral movement and also a natural pass catcher. He seems fearless and isn't afraid to run block or go over the middle (Sweed tends to shy away from the middle). He is a bit of a risk b/c he only started on year, but he also could be the best WR out of the entire class. With that said, here are some honorable mentions (2nd round picks at best):
Malcom Kelly: I think he's a decent WR but lacks break away burst. He can make some circus type catches in traffic, but that is my biggest concern with Kelly..he's always in traffic. Most of this is due to his lack of speed. There are a few things to like about Kelly: he fights for the ball and does a decent job sheilding off defenders. But there are also a few things to dislike about him: Seems to be self centered with diminished Keyshawn Johnson type skills. A good possession type reciever but will whine as if he's the teams true #1.
James Hardy: I love the kid as a red zone killer. He is a shade over 6'5 and has great jump ball/leaping skills. He is a bit lanky and takes a while to hit full speed. He needs to be more physical at the point of attack and shed off press coverage. He does find a knack for the "soft spot" of a defense but lacks YAC (yards after catch) to be a true double team threat. If red zone is your biggest issue, he is probably the best cure. He does have an incident that may suggest he has character flaws. But I think he is past that mistake and actually learned from it. Given that his past mistakes are behind him, I believe he is the second coming of Harold Carmichael.
Jordy Nelson: He reminds me of a combination of players. Chris Cooley obviously comes to mind, but this guy has hands like flypaper. When the ball is around him, he will catch it. He doesn't have alligator arms (imagine doing the florida "chomp chomp" when trying to catch the ball) and has pretty good moves in the open field (KR/PR as well). He doesn't have blazing speed, but enough to get to where he's going in a hurry. He has a pretty good frame and will go over the middle to make the tough catch. I would rate him higher than Kelly and Hardy as an "every down" player who can also return kicks/punts.
Desean Jackson: He could actually go in the 1st round if a team is willing to take a gamble that he is indeed the next Devin Hester (probably a Dante Hall with better pass catching ability). Although he is short and paper thin, he is the best playmaker in the draft (next to Mcfadden on offense). He has blistering speed and catches the ball well. But his lack of height and physical presence makes me shy away from him. If he were to gain 20 lbs it might sway my opinion. But he seems to avoid the weight room at all costs and he relys too much on his speed to gain an advantage. Not everyone in college is fast so this works fine on that level. But in the NFL, EVERYONE is fast so he can't rely on his speed alone. I think he would make a top notch slot reciever ( Wes Welker type) if he can gain a few pounds and can claw, scratch, kick his way out of bump n run coverage. If we already had a red zone threat at WR I would be all for drafting this kid. But as it is right now, we already have two speed midgets on our team (Kevin Curtis and Greg Lewis) and neither of them are the #1 we are all screaming for. I think we would be better served drafting a combo CB/WR who may not be as good as a PR/KR but better utilized at the skills position. Thoughts?
