The New England Patriots are bringing back their core special teams players from last season as they re-signed LB Tracy White and LB Niko Koutouvides of Plainville CT.

The Patriots have re-signed linebacker Niko Koutouvides to a one-year contract with a base salary of $825,000. Koutouvides was primarily a special teamer in 2011, accumulating nine total special teams tackles and one fumble recovery. Koutouvides will attempt to make the team in the same capacity in 2012. Patriots Retain LB Niko Koutouvides
The New England Patriots entered the free-agent foray by retaining linebacker Niko Koutouvides. Koutouvides is signed to a one-year deal worth $825,000, according to NFLPA documents. The site doesn't update immediately and Koutouvides wasn't included on a list of free agents released by the NFL earlier in the day, so it's likely this deal was completed over the weekend...

Pieces moved and game won
FOXBOROUGH - Matthew Slater, who hadn’t taken snaps at safety, even in practice, for two years, started at that position. Niko Koutouvides, who hadn’t started a game in seven years and hadn’t played a snap with the Patriots’ defense this season, was with the first 11 at linebacker. Nate Jones, signed less than a week ago, got a start at safety as well.

And while the end was really bad when they went into prevent...

Who is Patriots LB Niko Koutouvides and why might you care for Sunday night?
The Patriots took a big-time hit at inside linebacker this week, as starter Brandon Spikes is out for the Jets game with a knee injury. In addition, his backup Dane Fletcher has been out with a thumb injury for weeks. That’s brutal against a team that grounds and pounds.
While Gary Guyton will get the start and has shown he can step in capably, the Patriots may get contributions...

Patriots return to practice before facing the Jets: Spikes and Chung among the missing
The Patriot returned to the practice field and there were several notable players missing as the team prepares to face the Jets.
According to colleague Ian Rapoport, who was on hand at the upper practice field, safety Patrick Chung was not present. Chung landed hard on the ball of his foot, and was hobbling at end of game Sunday. If he can’t go Sunday, this would be another...
