This 2013-14 NHL season preview features the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks are coming off their 5th consecutive season with a winning percentage of .600 or better. They’ve been one of the league’s best and most consistent regular season teams of the last decade.
Unfortunately for the fans in Vancouver however, they’ve only made it past the second round of the playoffs once, losing in the Stanley Cup Final against the Boston Bruins in 2010-11.
They went through the last couple of seasons with what can at best be described as a goalie controversy. Incumbent starter Roberto Luongo was being pushed out of Vancouver by the younger (and cheaper) Cory Schneider.
In a cruel twist of fate, the massive 10 year contract the Canucks gave Luongo made him impossible to move via trade or buyout.
Vancouver went into the playoffs with a lot of questions. They came out of them with even more as the team completely collapsed and was swept by the league’s perennial playoff underachievers, the San Jose...

On Sunday, Edmonton Oilers center Sam Gagner suffered a broken jaw after Canucks’ winger Zack Kassian essentially slashed his face with a high stick. Gagner will be out of the Oilers lineup indefinitely, but seems to be in decent spirits despite the fact that his face is probably permanently destroyed. Thank you all for the support. Excited to come back stronger and hopefully better...

In case you missed it earlier today, Canucks forward Zack Kassian was suspended 5 regular season games. Plus the rest of the preseason.
WHY you ask? For his high stick that broke the jaw of Edmonton’s Sam Gagner on Saturday.
“As he nears the boards Kassian comes to a spinning stop, recklessly swinging his stick and striking Gagner in the face and breaking his...
Vancouver Canucks right wing Zack Kassian will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Monday for a high-sticking incident during a preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night at Rexall Place.
Kassian was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement...

Post-game coverage of the Canucks 6-1 pre-season win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Sure sounds like Torts like hos Mike Santorelli is playing.

Vancouver Canucks right wing Zack Kassian faces a phone hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety after breaking the jaw of Oilers winger Sam Gagner Saturday night.

The Oilers announced Sunday that Gagner is out indefinitely with a...
Vancouver Canucks forward Dale Weise has been suspended for the team's final three preseason games for delivering an illegal check to the head of Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall during NHL preseason game No. 50 on Saturday Sept. 21 in Edmonton the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

NHL director of player safety Brendan Shanahan and the rest of his office aren’t getting any breaks even if it is only the preseason.
There’s been plenty of nasty play so far in the exhibition slate, and that was continued Saturday night in the Oilers-Canucks games. While the infraction was seemingly a mistake, there could certainly be discipline on the way for Vancouver’s...
John Tortorella is assembling the puzzle pieces that are his Vancouver Canucks and he still doesn’t know just where Zack Kassian fits.
It’s clear he’d like Kassian to slide in alongside the Sedin twins on Vancouver’s first line and develop into the type of power forward many project him to be.
So far that Kassian puzzle piece hasn’t exactly snapped into place. The 22...
from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,
Everyone is going to be pushed outside of his comfort zone. Except Luongo — all the coach wants to see from his No. 1 goalie is that he gets back into his. Tortorella believes the goaltending circus finally left town when Cory Schneider was traded in July and has made it no secret that Luongo is now the most important player the Canucks have...
The effects of preseason actions continue to spill over into the regular season.
Vancouver’s Zack Kassian has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason slate, as well as five regular-season games for his hit on Sam Gagner in Saturday night’s game. Kassian’s high-stick on the Oilers center resulted in Gagner losing some teeth, in addition to suffering a broken jaw....

It took four games, but the Vancouver Canucks finally picked up their first win of the preseason.
The Canucks jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 6-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Vancouver dressed almost every NHL regular they have so the result wasn't surprising; although the Coyotes iced a pretty...

Having a great preseason does not a season make. Working out the kinks, finding new chemistry and getting ready for the long grind is what exhibition is all about. Let’s just make it shorter, we get the point already.
Despite dropping their first two preseason games, the Vancouver Canucks are finding out that signing big ticket players out of free agency and selling the farm to...
