Los Angeles needed a good game from Dustin Penner, and that’s exactly what they got.

Getting a goal and an assist, including a +2 on the night, Penner and the Kings grabbed two huge points over the Nashville Predators, beating them 4-2. Nashville, who had a chance to catch and overpass the Detroit Red Wings with a win tonight, lost their second straight game in a row after dropping a 2-1 shootout decision to the Sharks on Thursday.

With Jonathan Bernier starting the game for the Los Angeles Kings, the Predators could only expect a tough matchup facing a goalie who has a lifetime save percentage of .933% against Nashville.

Nashville would start this competition on the wrong end of the spectrum, letting Los Angeles essentially walk up and down the ice with ease. The Kings made them pay, breaking the ice with an Anze Kopitar steamer at 7:53 of the first period. Finishing the period being outshot 10-5 and outscored 1-0, Nashville had to have a better response in the second.

Coming out with a bit more fire than the first twenty minutes, the Predators controlled the pace of the second period from the get-go. Benefiting from two separate Dustin Brown cross-checking penalties within 5 minutes of each other, Nashville took advantage of one of them to tie the game at 1. Martin Erat’s point shot on the powerplay gave the Predators the equalizer at 13:43 of the third period.

The third period, however, will be a period Nashville will want to forget very quickly. Scoring 3 goals in a span of 8 minutes, the Los Angeles Kings throttled the Predators with goals from Dustin Penner, Dwight King, and Kyle Clifford. Although Nashville would cut the lead to 2 with a goal from Mike Fisher late in the period, it wouldn’t be enough. Los Angeles takes the season series with Nashville 3 games to 1

The Predators finish their West Coast road trip tomorrow evening with their final matchup against the Anaheim Ducks. Puck drop is at 7:00pm CST.
