Tonight would have been nice if we could have stuck to Luke Pither scoring his OHL leading 8th goal and 3 game winning goal of the season. But sadly we could not as Pither's Barrie Colts 6-4 win over the Guelph Storm was marred by 35 penalties including 5 different fights. Now we believe that fighting has it's place in hockey but sometimes at the junior level it gets out of control and takes away from the game. It was a disappointment to see what should have been a good match wind up with 93 PIMs.
Still Pither may have only one goal in this game, it is still an impressive start for the 20 year old as between the 8 goals (7 on the power play) and 3 game winners it is hard not to like his efforts.
With his Colts already up 4-3, Pither got his goal at 1:02 of the 3rd period off a feed from teammate Simon Gronvaldt for what proved to be the game winner. Pither's offense has been a huge reason why the Colts are off to a Eastern Conference best 3-0 record.
The Colts lead the OHL in goals scored with 20 but also 93 PIMs as well. Despite Pither's 8 goals, he is still not the leading scorer in the OHL; that honor belongs to his teammate Alexander Burmistrov (3-6-9)
For 20 minutes Mitch Gaulton and his Erie Otters made it a game with the defending Memorial Cup Champions the Windsor Spitfires. Sadly the other 40 minutes showed not only how good Windsor could be but also how they too can turn a game into a brawl. The Erie Otters held a 3-2 lead over the Spitfires thanks in part to Gaulton setting up teammate Andrew Yogan for a power play goal. It was Gaulton's 3rd point of the season (1-2-3) and while his offense is as advertised we would like to see his defense pick up a bit.
As in the Barrie/Guelph game, this one also turned ugly as 23 penalties for a total of 71 PIMs but just 4 fights (if that is any consolation). In this one it took all of 2 seconds in the game for the first fight to break out.
Still it does bother us that those same defending champions had boarding, instigator (twice), and a major for cross checking called on them. Those are the kinds of calls where someone could have gotten hurt and if anything helps fuel the anti-fighting crowd.
Games like these 2 do not help hockey's cause and maybe the CHL needs to become uniform with it's rules on fighting rather than 3 different sets of rules.

The Rangers/Wolfpack sent 20 year old Sam Klassen back to the Saskatoon Blades on Thursday. It is a move based in part due to the Rangers cutting Bobby Sanguinetti and the rumored refusal of Tomas Kundratek to report to Medicine Hat.Now Klassen might not be happy about returning to the Blades but in the long term it might help him. The Blades without Klassen were already ranked 6th in the weekly BMO CHL Mastercard Top 10.
The Blades are the defending champions of the WHL's Eastern Division and the addition of Klassen to a team that just received back 2 other key players from NHL training camps. It turns the Blades from a good team to a serious playoff contender in the WHL.

4 Goals says it all
I would be smiling too if I had a Sunday like Bobby Sanguinetti just finished having. Let us see we start with four goals, add in an assist, toss in a +3 and finish with a "First Star of the Game" all of which was a part of Sanguinetti's leading his Brampton Battalion to a 7-1 win over the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at home.Truly an awesome performance for...
Too Quiet a Night
It was a very quiet evening for Ranger prospects on Saturday evening as out of 6 prospects in action there is just one assist to show for the evening's efforts. One might chalk it up to being spoiled by the play of Chris Doyle and Evgeny Grachev who have been lighting up the scoreboard for a combined 29 points over the last 3 weeks.Tonight's Star Tomas Kundratek Medicine...
Show Stealer
This was an exhibition game, a chance for Team USA to get used to each other and work out the kinks before heading to Europe for the Under-20 Championships. It was on paper a mismatch given all the talent on the USA roster.Someone forgot to tell Max Campbell and his Western Michigan Broncos as they put up one heck of a fight before falling 4-2. From a Ranger standpoint this was supposed...
Thinking out loud
This was a nice quiet week for us to catch our breath as we await the announcements of the various World Junior National teams and to be honest the Rangers should be well represented. We are going to start with the player who we feel is the most deserving of a spot on Team USA and that is Bobby Sanguinetti of Trenton New Jersey. IF Sanguinetti does not earn a selection to Team USA...

Getting This Party Started
Those who are into basketball are into the "Going to the Dance" which is not bad but for us who love hockey this is the start of a great big party. For us this is the best time of year because all over North America at US colleges, the CHL leagues and even the USHL is the fun called the playoffs. For Ranger fans who want an idea of the team's future this year is one...
Seeing Double
This is the kind of decision that we love to have to make; which prospect deserves to be the Prospect Park Prospect of the Week. We have had a couple of weeks this season when nobody deserved the award but for the first time we had 2 very worthy and deserving prospects to choose from. They were both drafted in the same draft year; one was a 1st round pick while the other was taken...
Two Goals No Waiting
Two Ranger prospects and two more goals for the offensive explosion that is marking this season's prospect coverage. To see that the Rangers have this kind of firepower waiting in the wings to join the pipeline only makes the Ranger future that much more exciting to look forward to.Take tonight as two key prospects from the 2006 draft class were in action and both are already...
What Else is New?
Tonight's First StarChris Doyle (2008 5th) is going to turn this place into Doyle's Park the way he has been playing as of late. Just when you think that Doyle is slowing down that Doyle comes up with another solid effort as he did on Friday evening. The scoreboard is going to show that the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored 34 seconds into the overtime period to earn a 4...
Skokan Was A Smoking
Prospect of the WeekSo when we were trying to figure out who deserved being named Prospect of the Week, we kept seeing David Skokan's name just about every other day last week.We had Ryan Hillier with a hat trick then another goal along with an assist, Bobby Sanguinetti had a 2 goal game followed by another goal but then we looked closer and saw the difference maker. On the 5th...
Hello's and a Thank You
First StarHello do you know me? OK all kidding aside it has been a while since Antoine Lafleur (2007 2nd) has been able to enjoy a game let alone earn one of the Prospect Park Stars of the Night.Friday night Lafleur was in net for his Prince Edward Island Rocket as they were hosting the Val-d'Or Foreurs in QMJHL action. The Rocket thanks to the game's "First Star"...
The Saturday Special
Tonight's Star - Max Campbell, Western Michigan BroncosThis one is kind of personal as we have gotten to know Max Campbell (2007 5th) over the last year and like the young man from Strathroy, Ont. It is hard not to like a prospect who spends his own money to attend Ranger camps in order to become a better player. It is even harder not to like someone who when everything was not...
At least the Prospects can score
While the Rangers are having major problems scoring goals, the same can not be said for their prospects. If anything it becomes news when the prospects do not score.Case in point is today's star Tomas Zaborsky (2006 5th) of the Saginaw Spirit (OHL) who had 2 goals and an assist in the Spirit's 7-2 road win over the Ottawa 67's. That performance earned Zaborsky the game...
Friday Night Fun
While the Rangers struggle their way though the exhibition season, the prospects are getting a chance to show off what they learned at Traverse City.Prince Edward Island 5 Halifax 2Chris Doyle has to be the most pleasant of surprises starting off the season as 3 games in and Doyle is 1-4-5 after a second straight 2 assist game for the Ranger's 2008 5th Round pick. The difference...
F-I-R-E is a 4 Letter Word
It is kind of funny to read a lot of the comments written by Ranger fans on the various blogs these days. After the 1-0 loss, the internet was full of "Fire Renney" postings but one thing stands out from these postings. If you want to fire the coach then how come almost 90% of those wanting this termination do not offer a suggestion as to who should replace Renney? Yes that...
