The Islanders had their team picked apart during free agency. Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Viktor Kozlov, and Richard Zednik all left shortly after the team parted ways with Alexei Yashin for salary cap reasons. Between those 5 players the team lost a total of 126 goals. Despite what seems like a significant hit GM Garth Snow seems optimistic. 'If you look at our team now compared to what we had, the potential to get goals from our forwards is far greater than what it was last September,' He told Newsday. 'Quite honestly I think we're better.' The new players scored a total of 41 fewer goals than the players they are replacing.

  • Better. More balanced with actual leadership and still young kids like Bruno and Campi who put their heart and soul into it. Dubi's proven himself a fighter, Witt's so fiesty but won't do drugs, and Christ-Bill Guerin. Team's really coming together and I can't wait to see it all unfold.

Isle's 'C' Is Surprise to Guerin

According to the AP, the announcement came as a surprise to Guerin, who learned the news along with everyone else when his brand-new Islanders jersey was unveiled at yesterday's press conference, its left breast adorned with the captain's "C." In the Post, Brooks cautions that the no-move clause in Guerin's contract guarantees that the soon-to-be 37-year...

NHL: (video) Worst hockey accident ever, not for squeamish

After talking about the video of the Richard Zednik accident with a friend of mine the other day he sent me over the below video, which I remember seeing. I do not know the exact details of the video but what I do know is that Goalie Clint Malarchuck gets his throat cut with a skate blade and starts to gush blood on the ice - yup that one-ups Zednik

Should the NHL require neckguards?

Author's Note: The recent injury to pro hockey player Richard Zednik has re-opened the debate of if the NHL should require it's players to wear protective neck guards. In Defense Of The Ryan Smyth Trade

The talk of the town this week has been the trade of career Edmonton Oiler Ryan Smyth from the only club he's ever known to the unknown territory of Long Island. Aside from a very small minority of supporters, reaction in Oil Country has ranged from outraged to disgust. Despite an excellent celebrati...

Bad Mojo at the RBC for Canes this season

I think the problem with the Canes and the struggles on home ice go back to game 5 of the SCF. You know, when Ryan Smyth dug up the coin at center ice. Maybe what the Canes need to do is bury something else at center ice to get their mojo back. Maybe they can bury last season's memories so they can f...

Holmgren critical of Downie punch

james mirtle: Holmgren critical of Downie punch - A hockey journalist's blog: He's part of a team now and needs to think in those terms and not selfishly. I'm upset. It was Jason Blake. Jason is not a fighter. You get a player in that position and I don't [think] Jason had his gloves off. I'm n...

Comps

That's Wayne Cashman and some other guy playing in the OHA, mid-1960s. Both of these fellows had fine major league careers but only one helps us in discussing "comparables." Wayne Cashman is a nice comp for a player like Ryan Smyth in that they played a similar gritty style and had enough skill to pl...
