MVN:
Howdy from Ottawa.
With goalie's Pascal Leclaire and Brian Elliott (though still unsigned) in place, Ottawa has dealt Alex Auld to Dallas for a 6th round draft pick. So for those who thought Auld was going to bring a 3rd round pick or a forward...I told you so.
Sorry folks but I had too. I've gotten too many comments stating as much. For Ottawa, it was a move that had to be done. Elliott is done in the AHL and Auld had a one-way ticket.
Dallas is getting a top-end backup goalie. No question about it. Auld went 16-18-1 with a .911 save percentage and a 2.48 GAA. You really need to look past the win-loss record with Auld considering the Sens couldn't put two goals together until the final 20-games. Personally, I think Auld is better than Elliott but Brian has better potential.
Also today Russia announced which players they have invited to their Olympic camp, two of which are Senators. Newly minted Senator Alex Kovalev and defensemen Anton 'A-Train' Volchenkov will be attending and barring injury/act of god, both will be representing mother Russia in Vancouver early next year. What no invite for Ilya Zubov? Just kidding.

Dany Heatley Is Not A Dallas Star...
... but Alex Auld is. The Senators apparently didn't see a need this season for a quality backup making only $1 million who posted a 2.47 GAA with .911SV% and 16 wins last season. Granted it was in 43 games but it was for the bag of suck that was your 2008-2009 Ottawa Senators. While I'm not entirely surpised by this move I thought perhaps if/when this move was made it might...
With Dany
I find myself thinking a few times about a Sens lineup for 2009/10 with Dany Heatley in it.Heatley/Spezza/KovalevFoligno/Fisher/AlfieShannon/Kelly/NeilDonovan/Bass/RuutuWinchesterKuba/LeePhillips/KarlssonVolchenkov/CampoliPicardLeClaireElliotThat's a lineup under the cap assuming Smith is moved. What's the difference from last year's debacle? Barber Shop
Howdy from Ottawa.
Got my bi-annual hair cut today at Super Sam's Barber Shop ($10 a cut @ 541B Gladstone Avenue if your in Ottawa).
Sam's is the unoffical Ottawa Senators Barber Shop with about 20 Sens jersey's hanging around the place among other Sens memorabilla. The Shop has been featured on television and print in Ottawa several times.
So I went in and got a hair...
The missing piece
Howdy from an 'Earl Grey' kinda day in Ottawa.
Ok. Alex Koavlev spoke to reporters today, but can't go by 'The piece' as it belongs to former Pens now Kings D Rob Scuderi. Maybe he can go by 'The link'? Or Heatley's older replacement by 8 years?
News now has come out that Kovy was offered the SAME terms by Montreal as Ottawa offered, yet he still...

On the Beat: Kovalev says nothing personal and more Heatley news
What team beat writers are saying this afternoon:
Adrian Dater of the Denver Post wishes Joe Sakic a happy 40th birthday. Dater thinks Sakic will retire, but the jury is still out on that decision.
Alexei Kovalev says nothing is personal between him and the Canadiens. Gainey treated him very well during his time in Montreal, so [...]
Newcomer Alexei Kovalev Makes Ottawa Senators More Dangerous
Did you ever hear the expression "don't poke the bear?"
That's the statement I've always used about the Ottawa Senators. My advice to teams was get in, get out, don't get fancy, and pray you win. Their top line is one of the best in the East, and the addition of Alexei Kovalev only makes them better.
Kovalev has been with the team for two days, and...

Kovalev looking for fresh start with Senators
OTTAWA (AP) -Alex Kovalev's disappointment in leaving the Montreal Canadiens is balanced by the belief he can be a missing piece in helping the Ottawa Senators rebound from bad times.

NHL Morning Papers (Wednesday Edition): Jonas Gustavsson is the talk of the town, Alexei Kovalev has big hopes for the Senators and Joe Sakic officially retires today
Free Agency
Jonas Gustavsson has decided to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the fact that Brian Burke came overseas to talk to him a couple times clearly didn’t hurt. His numbers from Sweden sure are impressive. So, with this signing, are the Leafs thinking playoffs?
Even though the Stars did not land Gustavsson, new GM Joe Nieuwendyk [...]
Three teams with Cap Issues
There are several teams that are tight against the salary cap, such as the Flyers and Flames, but those teams look like they can manage without any major roster moves. The same can’t be said for the following three teams.
Ottawa Senators
With the Kovalev signing they are now over the cap for the 2009-10 season [...]
