The Canes will start Michael Leighton in goal, giving him his first start of the season. Leighton became a father for the second time early Friday morning when his wife, Jennifer, gave birth to a daughter. Leighton has not played since Oct. 3, when he came in for Cam Ward and was in for the last 29 minutes of the Canes' 7-2 loss. That was his only appearance as Ward started the first 11 games of the season.

Maurice stands by decision on Leighton

PHILADELPHIA — It was easy to second-guess the decision, before and after the fact. Canes goaltender Michael Leighton had played in just one game this season and that was Oct. 3, in relief of Cam Ward. His wife, Jennifer, gave birth early Friday morning to a baby daughter. He missed practice Friday and took a commercial flight to Philadelphia Friday evening. A year ago, Leighton...

Flyers 6, Canes 1

Michael Leighton made his first start of the season Saturday for the Carolina Hurricanes, which seemed a curious move. Leighton was up into the wee hours of Friday morning as his wife, Jennifer, gave birth to a baby daughter. There was little rest time and even less preparation time for the Canes' backup goaltender. Leighton, perhaps understandably, wasn't very sharp...

Sharks 5, Hurricanes 1

Make it nine losses in a row. The Carolina Hurricanes were beaten 5-1 by the San Jose Sharks on Sunday at the RBC Center. The Canes (2-8-3), who have not won since Oct. 9 against Florida, led 1-0 early in the second on Brandon Sutter's second goal in as many games, then quickly gave it up to trail 3-1 after two periods. The Sharks (10-4-1), who have won their last five...

Sharks @ Canes

No surprise: Erik Cole was activated off injured reserve this morning. Be interesting to see how the lines look in pregame warmup. Cole missed 10 games.

What’s Wrong With Carolina?

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer, In the winter of 2003, after a dismal six-goal loss to the Los Angeles Kings, the Carolina Hurricanes reached the inevitable conclusion that no matter how hard anyone tried or what anyone did, their season was only getting worse. And it proceeded to get worse, all the way to last place. Is it possible the Hurricanes have reached...

Hurricanes Struggle

After making the semi-finals in the 2009 playoffs, it appeared that the Carolina Hurricanes would have a strong 2009/10 season.  So far that hasn’t been the case.  The Hurricanes had a solid start winning two of their first four games, including a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers, but they haven’t won any games since.  This gives Carolina a league leading...

Carolina Hurricanes (2-6-3) at Philadelphia Flyers (5-4-1), 1 p.m.

The Carolina Hurricanes will try to end a lengthy slide this afternoon, when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers for a battle at Wachovia Center.

Eklund: Rumour Ray Whitney to Calgary (e3-4), Biron to Detroit (e2), Price

Quick hit. Whitney... By days end this will likely be an e4. just waiting on a callback. More to come on what could be coming back... Biron.... Marty Biron may very well be the solution the Red Wings are looking for. Talking to a scout today, it is definitely possible. Price... I am also talking to a Carey Price source. I can't yet reveal the team, but...

San Jose Sharks (9-4-1) at Carolina Hurricanes (2-7-3), 1:30 p.m.

Two teams heading in opposite directions will meet this afternoon in Raleigh, as the hapless Carolina Hurricanes welcome the streaking San Jose Sharks for a battle at RBC Center.

Bill Meltzer: Flyers gameday: 10-31-09 vs. Hurricanes

PREVIEW The inconsistent Flyers (5-4-1) return home today for a Halloween matinee against the disappointing Carolina Hurricanes (2-6-3). Philadelphia shut out Carolina on opening night, but after a 3-0 start, have been an underachieving team. Up front, in the absence of Simon Gagne (hernias) and Daniel Briere (groin pull), the team will need youngsters Claude Giroux and James...
