Among the many entertaining break-out sessions at the Caps Convention this past weekend, one stood out to fans and players alike. "Kids Ask the Craziest Questions" featured Matt Bradley, David Steckel (in the middle, hanging his head with laughter), and Brooks Laich. The young fans' questions ranged from basic ("What was your first NHL goal?") to the kind of open-ended questions that led to some serious self-editing by the players ("What's the craziest thing a girl ever did to get you to notice her?"), all asked with wide-eyed innocence by kids thrilled to be chatting with their red-clad sports heroes. At the Capitals' annual media luncheon yesterday, and I asked Matt Bradley if they had as much fun on the Kids panel as it seemed. "First of all I didn't expect that many people there . . . I thought there'd be 50 kids or so, and that we'd be looking for questions, but we couldn't get to everyone. Like all three o...

The Washington Capitals' 2009-2010 season starts tonight

Preview: The 2009-10 Washington Capitals

Through the abject agony that was watching the Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup triumph in June, I found a silver lining: moreso than from a young stud goalie standing on his head, moreso than from a bevy of bluechip blueliners, the Penguins raised Lord Stanley high above their heads due disproportionately to the heroic efforts of their Big Two. I was forced to reconsider...

John Thompson Approves of Brooks Laich

"Each year my goal coming back to camp, I don't set a goal of scoring 27 goals and 34 assists for so many points or whatever," Brooks Laich told John Thompson on ESPN 980 Tuesday afternoon. "The ultimate thing that I want to do is win a Stanley Cup. That's the only thing that matters to me. And to be able to do that, I try to help the team whatever way I can...

It's Alex Ovechkin vs. Zdeno Chara

by Christopher BottaFiled under: Bruins, Capitals, FanHouse ExclusiveBOSTON -- The Washington Capitals do not have all the answers for getting around Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Zdeno Chara, so maybe they're trying to kill the 6-9 defenseman with compliments."Best defenseman in the league," said head coach Bruce Boudreau after Thursday morning's skate at TD...

Penguins Bourque the Capitals

There were some interesting moves yesterday. The Caps waived Chris Bourque for salary purposes, hoping he would sneak through into the AHL. He didn’t and wound up claimed by the Penguins. Bourque is bummed, yet psyched. Bourque has a lot of upside. He’s looked great in the AHL, and while he’s small, that smallness has translated to great [...] Related posts:Penguins...

caps season preview

(photo by Jim McIsaac) The Washington Capitals kick off what has to be D.C.’s most anticipated professional sports season in recent memory Thursday night, when they take on the Boston Bruins in their season opener. Why are folks so jacked up for the upcoming season? That’s easy. The Redskins ended any hopes of a competitive season when they [...]

catching up with al iafrate

(courtesy photo) We recently had the pleasure of chatting with one of our favorite childhood players, former Washington Capitals defenseman Al Iafrate. For those not familiar, the man was big and tough, fast as hell and had a slapshot like no other. Oh, and he had a hairstyle that rivaled Barry Melrose. So needless to say, [...]

'It's like Canada': DC finally embraces the Caps

Who would ever have imagined it? The Washington Capitals are the "it" team in the nation's capital.

Dan Daly: Winning hockey isn't the goal

Everybody's thinking it, so why don't we just let Brooks Laich say it? "Right now, it's great to be a Washington Capital." If you doubt this, then you probably weren't at National Harbor last weekend for the first-ever Capitals Convention. On a football Saturday, 5,000 fans showed up to ogle their heroes - and the team says it could have sold twice as many...

SportsBiz: Dispute likely puts opener on ice

It appears certain that Washington Capitals fans with DirecTV will have to go to a friend's house or a bar to see Thursday's season opener against the Boston Bruins. The NHL season likely will get under way without a resolution to the dispute that has kept the league's main television partner, Versus, off DirecTV's satellite service. Versus and DirecTV were expected...

Steven Hindle: Caps @ Bruins Versus Preview

Let The Games Begin! The Caps are set to embark on possibly their strongest campaign in franchise history. They are quite similar to the squad they iced last season, having lost only Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov while newcomers Mike Knuble and Brendan Morrison will replace the veteran Russians and bring a new dynamic to an already dangerous Capitals club. Led by head...
