As recently as May 18th, GM Garth Snow backed Yashin, calling him "a vital part of the organization" despite the fact that Islanders fans had organized a petition and letter-writing campaign aimed at persuading owner Charles Wang to cut ties with the unpopular forward. Newsday columnist Mark Herrmann calls the move "the biggest victory in years" for Islanders fans, and praises Wang for listening to the pleas of his paying customers.

One of the stupidest moves ever in NHL history was signing this prat to a contract for 10 years, It's a suicidal move and you must be a complete moron to offer the deal in the first place. You're stuck with Yashin as you can't ever trade him for the money he's making. But it's even stupider buying him out at this point. It's still costing the team...
