With the NHL roster due at 3 pm today, the Flyers made their final moves to get their roster ready for Friday's opening game. An NHL team is able to keep 23 players on their roster so the Flyers had to shift a couple of players around to fit everyone in.As expected, rookie phenom James van Riemsdyk made the team after a strong preseason showing where he basically forced himself onto the roster. Also making the team after looking solid this preseason was forward Mika Pyorala. Not making the team, yet, was Blair Betts. Betts was brought in on a tryout basis and needs a contract to play for the Flyers. The Flyers are believed to be in negotiations with Betts at the moment but no agreement has been reached as of yet. Betts would make a great 4th line center who can win faceoffs and kill penalties so hopefully the Flyers reach a deal with him soon. With the Flyers keeping JVR, Pyorala and hopefully Betts, they could have 14 forwards. Since teams only suit up 12 forwards a game, ...

Blair Betts is (finally) a Flyer
It took longer than it should have, but training camp invitee Blair Betts has finally signed with the Flyers. According to Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly, Betts, who will be the 4th line center, signed a one year deal with the team. There was some hold-up with the money involved and that made the deal take longer than expected.Betts is the perfect complementary player for the Flyers...
Philadelphia Flyers Season Preview
This Friday the Flyers begin their annual quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup, and the expectations are as high as ever. Last year’s first round exit at the hands of the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins was a disappointing end to a season full of promise. With the taste of that bitter loss still fresh, [...]
Flyers, Hurricanes have high hopes this season
The Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes were knocked out of last season's playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup champions. They'll begin what they hope is a trip back to the postseason when they open 2009-10 at the RBC Center on Friday night.
Tim Panaccio: JVR a Flyer
JVR is a Flyer.
The Flyers have not announced it officially, but he told us today after practice he is making the road trip to start the season.
That means, he must be on the roster since it's due 3 p.m. today.
There was no way the FLyers could keep him off it. Just like, I feel this is no way they can keep Mika Pyorala off the roster, as well.
BTW: Randy JOnes practiced...
Bill Meltzer: Practice notebook: 10-1-09
Tim will have an update on his blog and CSN column, but here are some quick notes from practice:
* The Flyers have signed Blair Betts to a one-year contract.
* Brian Boucher worked out early this morning and has made some progress in recovering from his groin injury.
* Minor league goalie Michael Teslak worked out with the club today along with Johan Backlund. According...
Eklund: Is The Atlantic Division the Easiest to Predict in the NHL?
Of course I must fully disclose that this is the division I cover the most as an accredited media member of the Philadelphia Flyers, but even as I try my best to separate myself from that, I am left with a sense that this division is pretty much as predictable as it comes.
Perhaps the hardest pick in this division for me is the top spot. You may call me a homer were I to pick...

Betts Still Unsigned in Philly
from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
First-year wingers James van Riemsdyk and Mika Pyorala were on the 22-man roster that the Flyers submitted to the NHL yesterday.
Center Blair Betts was not.
Betts, 29, is trying to make the team on a tryout contract. After yesterday’s practice in Voorhees, general manager Paul Holmgren said he was still negotiating...
Bill Meltzer: Flyers preseason gameday: 9-29-09 vs. Wild
In the final tuneup before the start of the 2009-10 regular season, the Flyers will take on the Minnesota Wild at the Wachovia Center tonight. The Flyers will reportedly go with what more or less figures to be their opening night lineup on Friday, with the still-unsigned (as of this morning) Blair Betts being the main exception among the forwards.
Starting lineup:
Hartnell...
Tim Panaccio: Ash Will Sit
RALEIGH _ This won't come as a surprise to Flyer fans, but Arron Asham will be a sratch tonight against the Canes.
With the additions of Dan Carcillo, last last year, and now Ian Laperriere, you have 2 more similar players. Blair Betts is centering the two on the fourth line tonight.
Asham took it in stride but let's recall he did not miss any games last year other...
