The Flyers hopes to get past the Penguins and into the Stanley Cup Finals took a huge blow today when their best defenseman, Kimmo Timonen, was diagnosed with a blood clot in his ankle, effectively ending his season. Timonen's ankle felt sore ever since he was hit by a shot during the series with the Canadiens, so he went in for an exam today and the blood clot was discovered. This is a big setback for the Flyers. Timonen and Braydon Coburn have done an excellent job neutralizing their oppositions best offensive players throughout the playoffs. It's the worst timing possible with the Flyers preparing to play a team with the offensive firepower that the Penguins feature. Expect more playing time for Randy Jones and Derian Hatcher and for Jaroslav Modry to get back on the ice after missing most of the last series. Click the link for more.....

Kimmo Timonen Lost For Rest Of The Playoffs

The Flyers suffered a major blow to their defense today. Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia is reporting that Kimmo Timonen will be out for the rest of the playoffs with a blood clot in his left ankle. This is terrible news as Timonen was the Flyers best defenseman and was usually matched up with the best players on the opposing team. The Flyers are set to open the Eastern Conference...

The Turnpike Series: Penguins vs. Flyers

Tonight is the night... The Battle for Pennsylvania! FIO humor writer and western PA native Brian Lutz takes a look at this series between the Penguins and the Flyers. Though from the same state, these two teams are worlds apart - from their play to their fans to their cities. Lutz talks about the sharp contrasts and notes how this rivalry takes the cake as the most relative among...

Game One: Flyers Stumble in Loss

The anticipation of the "Keystone Clash" as Comcast SportsNet is calling it was dulled Thursday night by the news of Kimmo Timonen's blood clot in his left ankle, but the Flyers and Penguins faced off Friday night to put an end to the speculation and finally drop the puck on the Eastern Conference Finals. The physical battle that will surely preview the rest of this...

Flyers shake up defensive pairings

With Kimmo Timonen likely out for the remainder of the playoffs, the Flyers have to face the reality of playing an offensive juggernaut like the Penguins without their best defensive player. In Timonen's absence, the Flyers have completely re-shuffled their defensive pairs. Derian Hatcher, who has played well recently, will move up to the top pairing with Braydon Coburn, causing...

Flyers - Penguins Series Preview

The Eastern Conference Finals between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins is going to be unbelievable. That is all I have to say, just unbelievable. If you have any friends or family that don't watch hockey, sit them down and have them watch this series, they'll love the sport after seeing it. This series is going to have everything that hockey has to offer. Hard...

Eastern Conference Finals Preview

The Eastern Conference Finals features the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with the Philadelphia Flyers. This match up is extremely tough to call and could easily go seven games. Let's take a look at how the teams have done thus far throughout the playoffs and how they match up.

Flyers vs. Penguins: Eastern Conference Finals Breakdown

The wait is killing me. After only a day between the first and second rounds of the playoffs, the Flyers will end up going a full six days between games when they finally start their series with the Penguins. The Pens will have also been off for five days, so neither team will be carrying much momentum with them into Game One. I understand why the NHL wants to wait until the weekend...

Western Pennsylvania Takes Game One

Tonight was the start of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins take Game 1, 4-2. The first period was very entertaining with five goals scored in the period. Evgeni Malkin added two goals and added a helper. Sid the Kid added a nice tip in goal that was assisted by Marian Hossa. Petr Sykora got the scoring started...

T minus 2 days: Carly Simon on my mind

Allow me to explain for my younger readers. Carly Simon is/was a sexy singer in the 70's and 80's. She has a wide smile (think Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, but a lot better looking). She had a few big hits back then, to include "You're So Vain" and "Nobody Does it Better", which was in the soundtrack of the James Bond movie "The Spy Who...

Game One: Penguins' snipers prevail over Flyers, 4-2

A big factor coming into this series was whether which, if any, of starting goaltenders Marc-Andre Fleury and/or Martin Biron would come back down to earth, so to speak, after both having very impressive playoff runs to date.

Flyers' Timonen out indefinitely with blood clot in foot

In a huge blow to the Flyers' defensive corps, #1 defenseman Kimmo Timonen was ruled indefinitely out of the playoffs today with a blood clot in his left foot.

T minus 1 day: One guy's keys to the series

It's almost here friends, almost here. On the eve of Game One between the Penguins and Flyers, I don't think it's possible to analyze the series any more than it already has. But what the hell, let's give it one more shot.

Flyers lose another Game One

The Flyers simply don't like to win the first game of a series. For the third time in a row, the Flyers lost a Game One, this time in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2. Philly had previously dropped the first games in the Captials and Canadiens series and we all know how those turned out, so there is no reason to think the season is over. But, if...
