Friesen 5K set for Aug. 30

Hurricanes trainer Pete Friesen will host his annual preseason 5K run around the RBC Center on Aug. 30. This is the fourth running of the event, which has raised more than $75,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Eastern N.C. Canes players and coaches have traditionally participated, and many will again this year even after what happened to Rod Brind'Amour last year. Brind'Amour tore cartilage in his knee while running the event, which kept him on the shelf during training camp and contributed to his slow start to the season. But Friesen said many players have expressed an interest in running this year, a group that includes Ray Whitney, Joe Corvo, Matt Cullen, Tim Gleason, Chad LaRose, Sergei Samsonov, Eric Staal, Scott Walker, Aaron Ward and Cam Ward as well as coaches Paul Maurice, Ron Francis and Jeff Daniels.
