Joe Corvo's power-play goal with 11:52 to play gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead and Ray Whitney added a late score for a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers for Carolina's first preseason win.
Corvo's goal came after Maxim Afingoenov's power-play goal with 13:26 left pulled the Thrashers into a 2-2 tie. Corvo scored on a 5-on-3, with assists from Ray Whitney and Eric Staal, and Erik Cole then set up Whitney for a goal with 3:37 to play.
Scott Walker's goal at 9:52 of the first period and Eric Staal's power-play score early in the second have given the Canes a 2-1 lead over Atlanta after two periods.

Staal: The Next Generation
Eric Staal sat out of practice today. Not because of some injury or illness that would have us all worried. Nothing like that at all. His wife Tanya gave birth to the couple’s first child—a boy—on Tuesday, and he spent the day with her and their newborn son.
