Joe Corvo's power-play goal with 11:52 to play gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead and Ray Whitney added a late score for a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers for Carolina's first preseason win. Corvo's goal came after Maxim Afingoenov's power-play goal with 13:26 left pulled the Thrashers into a 2-2 tie. Corvo scored on a 5-on-3, with assists from Ray Whitney and Eric Staal, and Erik Cole then set up Whitney for a goal with 3:37 to play.
