MVN:
Howdy from a rainy day in Ottawa.
First let's deal with reality for a moment. A blogger has suggested that the NHLPA's statement saying they are 'backing Dany Heatley till his grave' in regards to his situation in Ottawa doesn't do anything to dispell whether or not it's members are a little ticked off with Dany. The question is how many NTC's have been given out so far in free agency and how many players/agents can draw a direct line between that amount and Heatley's situation.
While Heatley isn't costing players money you have to imagine he is costing them power in their new contracts or at bare minimum the situation has been a strong reference point in negotiations. So please take what the NHLPA's spokespeople say with a grain of salt. Of course they are going to back up a union member...especially one that makes $7.5 mil, a season. But internally, that is where I believe some divide would be present regarding Dany.
Also it has been ...

The Ottawa Senators are on the hook for a $4 million signing bonus to forward Dany Heatley.

Utterly Bewildered
Howdy from a hungover Ottawa. Good show last night from the Hill. My favourite part about Canada Day is seeing so many different peoples and cultures celebrating one nation.
Not totally shocked Heatley and Neil are still Sens today. Shocked on how it happened.
Obviously Bryan Murray and Co. were put in a difficult situation when Heatley decided to cut and run. Obviously however it...
NHL free agency: Dany Heatley declines to waive no-trade clause for Edmonton Oilers before midnight deadline
Dany Heatley is now $4-million richer but he's still with the Ottawa Senators.
Heatley vetoes again
Looks like Dany Heatley is getting his $4 million from Ottawa, and Edmonton is getting stuck again.
Heatley again declined the request to waive his no-trade clause, even after personal visits from Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini of the Oilers’ front office. So he remains in Ottawa, $4 million richer, and on a team on which [...]

With the signing of Rick Nash to a long-term deal, the Blue Jackets may now have a far better chance of attracting talent to Columbus, opines Aaron Portzline.
The Wings are working on a deal with Jiri Hudler, while also looking to add a forward through free agency.

In Defense of Dany Heatley (sort of)
One thing I was struck by yesterday as speculation unfolded on various signings, is that hockey fans and journalists are often very willing to believe the worst things about hockey players, and usually without any substantial confirmation that those things are true.
The Dany Heatley drama appears to be a grand example of this. Ask nearly any fan today what he thinks of...
Source: Heatley to SJ for a package involving Marleau/Michalek
Howdy from a now sunny again Ottawa.
Rumoured from a source saying Dany Heatley is off to play with Big Joe in San Jose for a package including Patrick Marleau and/or Milan Michalek. Wasn't I just talking about these guys earlier today?
Again, rumour only as of now. Nothing else out of the Sens camp...given the need to deal Dany and our cap situation we looked like a '...
Dany Heatley meets with Kevin Lowe: The secret transcript
Two men enter. One leaves. As everyone knows by now, Oilers president Kevin Lowe rushed to Kelowna last night to meet with Senators winger Dany Heatley in an attempt to convince him to waive his no-trade clause and accept a deal to Edmonton.Neither side is commenting about what went on at the meeting. But as long-time readers may have suspected, DGB spies were able to breach the security...
On Heatley and signing bonuses
Following the Dany Heatley story for the past few days has been a little bit depressing as an Oilers fan but, given that if you’re going to suck, you might as well be interesting, it isn’t all that bad. There are a lot of points that I think merit a bit of comment but [...]

Among the items:Re: Heatley. "Any type of player movement takes time, whether you're at the draft or trading." Later: "He's a good person."Where is the Heatley deal now? "We're trying to better our hockey club. Where this goes at this point I'm not sure, that's up to Bryan (Murray) and Dany Heatley." Later: "They just haven&...
Senators Lose Leverage and Increase Demands
There’s a lot I don’t get about the Dany Heatley ransom demands.
Like why are the Oilers so hot for a player who so obviously doesn’t want to play for them? Are they only interested because they know he’ll demand a trade in another two seasons? Do they think they can change him?
And as the demand [...]
Late signings: Gaborik, Gionta and Sullivan
The Oilers are meeting with Dany Heatley tonight. Heatley is bothering everyone in the hockey world. Just end this circus already.
Brian Gionta has signed with the Montreal Canadiens for 5 years, $25 million. A lot of money to throw at Gionta, but the Habs have clearly demonstrated their intention to go with speed and skill [...]
