Watching the Hurricanes practice today was the man most concerned about the direction of the season -- owner Peter Karmanos Jr. Karmanos said he was in town on business, not to drop by for a few words with the players or try to boost their morale. Like most in the organization, Karmanos said he did not have a clear answer for what's ailing this team or why it can't shake a winless streak that now has reached 12 games. "I've never come close to having a losing streak like that," he said. "And this is a very good hockey team. I haven't given up on it. We have a great coaching staff. "We just need to hang on tight because we're just as capable of winning 12 in a row, or more capable of winning 12 in a row as losing 12 in a row. Or, excuse me, a 12-game winless streak, which is different. "We have an excellent hockey team. I'm not worried. I'm not panicked." His thoughts on what's gone wrong in the 2-11-3 st...

Hurricanes place G Ward on injured reserve

The struggling Carolina Hurricanes have placed goalie Cam Ward on injured reserve with a sliced left leg. The Hurricanes made a pair of moves before Wednesday night's game against Los Angeles. They called up defenseman Bryan Rodney from their AHL affiliate in Albany to fill Ward's roster spot. They also said defenseman Joni Pitkanen probably wouldn't skate against...

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward will remain at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH, through Sun...

Maurice Has Faith In His Team

from Mike G. Morreale of NHL.com, Coach Paul Maurice is faced with the realization his 2-11-3 team must carry on without the services of injured franchise linchpins Eric Staal (upper body) and Cam Ward (left leg laceration) for the foreseeable future. “I still believe in this team,” Maurice said after Monday’s practice. “We had a tough stretch back in 2003 when half...

With Ward out, 'Canes sign vet Legace for 1 year

The Carolina Hurricanes are turning to veteran goalie Manny Legace to help replace the injured Cam Ward. The Hurricanes on Monday signed Legace to a one-year contract that will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level or $105,000 if he is sent to the minors. The 36-year-old has a career NHL record of 177-92-36 and was 2-2 with a 3.21 goals-against average this season with the AHL...

'Canes place G Cam Ward on injured list

Matt Karash: Cam Ward out about a month...Best thing that could happen?

First, let me be very clear. In no way am I suggesting that the Carolina Hurricanes are a better team over the course of an 82-game season, playoff series, or whatever else without Cam Ward. And though he has not been great during the past couple weeks, the team's current struggles by no means rest more than his fair share on his shoulders. But all that said, the Carolina...

We've got us a new goalie...

Well, it looks like Cam Ward's going to be out 3-4 weeks, so faced with the prospect of an extended period with Michael Leighton and Justin Peters, the Canes went and signed Manny Legace to a two-way contract.Really, I think the Canes should apologize to Legace for taking him from the winning AHL Chicago Wolves (winning being a relative word, as they are 5-7-1 on the season... but...

Canes show interest in Toskala?

With Cam Ward still in the hospital, it was announced today that Carolina is looking at adding goaltending depth to their team. I was told by a source today that one player the team has looked at is Vesa Toskala. Toskala is in the final year of a $4 million per year deal, and is one of the few potential starting goaltenders available on the trade market. To offset the cost, the...

Hurricanes sign Legace to replace sidelined Ward

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes are turning to veteran goalie Manny Legace to help replace the injured Cam Ward.

Best guess: Canes could turn to Legace

So what's the Canes' next move? Cam Ward will be out at least three to four weeks, general manager Jim Rutherford says, so a goaltending decision must be made. The best guess here is that the Hurricanes will sign a goaltender and that it will be Manny Legace. He's 36, he's experienced and he played well against the Canes in a preseason exhibition game during...

No goalie move yet

On Sunday, the Hurricanes announced that they have reassigned forward Zach Boychuk to the Albany River Rats.  This, supposedly, will be to make room for Ray Whitney to return from his “upper body injury”.  All reports indicate that The Wizard will be back in the lineup on Veterans Day.  This is a bit of good news.  There’s a big surprise, though.  Even...
