And that's before I bring up the fact that this team was up for sale and facing the possibility of relocation as recently as last year. But Penguins management had a vision, one that was at least partially fulfilled on Sunday as another step was taken toward the ultimate goal of a championship. For the architects of the team, it had to be an incredibly rewarding day. Despite this being a long-range plan, the puzzle came together much quicker than anyone could have imagined, although that was certainly expedited by the February acquisitions of the final pieces: Pascal Dupuis, Hal Gill, and Marian Hossa. And for Penguin fans, some of the most loyal in all of sports, it was a memorable day as well. I was there for the last day of the 2003-04 season as 16,124 boisterous Pens fans filled Mellon Arena...

Scott Pattison: Oil goin’ to Carolina in the early morn

The Oilers are headed to Carolina for the second game of a five-game road trip, but with only one point in their pockets, after dropping a 5-4 shootout victory to the Washington Capitals last night. Deadlocked at 4-4 after a scoreless overtime, the Oil and Caps sent 24 shooters to centre ice, with...

Capital Gains

What a great job by Bruce Boudreau and the Washington Capitals to climb their way up to sole possession of first place in the Southeast Division. Granted, they're just slightly above .500 but still it's a great run by them. I heart Ovechkin ESPN - NHL - National Hockey League (http://scores.espn.g...

Would You Like To Take a Survery?

Upon leaving the arena yesterday, members of the staff were handing out business cards that mentioned an online survey. So having some free time to myself this morning, I sat down and took the aforementioned survey, taking the onus to do what I can to contribute to a better Washington Capitals experi...

PICTURE OF THE DAY 4

WORST TO FIRST...Somehow, the Washington Capitals went from last and out of the NHL playoff marathon to first (and in the playoffs) with a win on the final night of the regular season. Here, the Capitals' Sergei Fedorov, left, of Russia celebrates his goal with Matt Cooke (24) during the second period...

No Love in the City Of for the Caps

Where did the Washington Capitals go? It couldn't have been them that I saw last night. It had to be some sort of hockey team impostors. For starters, the Caps are just too soft with their passes. If they feather one more D-to-D pass that gets picked off for a goal, I don't know what I'll do. Ma...

Flyers Fans Working Security For Megadeth

Two weeks ago, the Washington Post's resident hockey novice Mike Wise put together an inflammatory column about the Flyers, their fans, and the city of Philadelphia. Wise later commented that the article was meant to be a piece of satire. Many took offense to the article, and sent hundreds of emails and phone calls in the direction of the Washington Post. In fact, the Flyers...

Calgary's Cinderella Man

The question was put to Tyler Sloan as he sat in the far corner of the Washington Capitals dressing room: If someone made a movie out of your career, what would they call it?

In Two Years They'll Need Four Seats

OK, in light of last night's ugly game (paralleling the game in the following story a bit, actually), let's have some fun today, shall we? In November, my friend (and fellow Fighting Blue Hen) Todd and his wife Andrea had their first children: beautiful twin daughters. Elani and Hannah recently made their very first visit to the Verizon Center, and Todd was kind enough to...

Holding a Club Shotless for 20 Minutes Is a Rare, Rare Feat

Including the postseason, the Washington Capitals have now played 2,873 games, and in only four of them have they held an opponent shotless for an entire period. Interestingly, two of those games have come against Florida (last night and on February 15, 2003). If you do the math, you appreciate how extraordinary an accomplishment last night's third period was. Multiply...

RED ALERT: Caps bust in Atlanta, On to Florida

The Washington Capitals did precisely what they have done several times this season, came down to the level of competition they were playing, and ended up losing, 5-1 in Atlanta. It is a repeated performance that frustrates HB Bruce Boudreau. The intensity and effectiveness simply wasn't in Atlanta for the Caps, as the Thrashers jumped on the Caps early.
