Gritty forward Matt Bradley stopped by The Gardens Ice House in Laurel on Nov. 9 to skate around with kids learning how to play, to sign autographs, and most importantly, to hang out with the captains of the beer league teams. Representing the Screaming Squirrels ice team, I had the opportunity to meet Matt and [...]

‘Tell Quintin Laing He’s My Favorite Player’

If you were to meet a professional hockey player, would your parting words be “Tell Quintin Laing he’s my favorite player”? That’s what I heard someone tell Matt Bradley the other night, and Bradley responded kindly, “I will.” Now, Quintin Laing is certainly a fan favorite, a gritty, shot-blocking, hard nosed player who deserves accolades, and my [...]

Alexander Ovechkin Is No Yakov Smirnoff

Alexander Ovechkin strikes me as someone who would have an incredible sense of humor but one of his jokes fell flat over the weekend when he reportedly jokingly told a reporter over the weekend that he may be out more than a month. Ovechkin, who was quoted by Yahoo! on Saturday night as saying he could [...]

Wednesday's Three Stars: Semin's three not a trick, but fuels Caps

No. 1 Star: Alexander Semin(notes), Washington CapitalsThe Russian sniper didn't wait long to open the scoring at Verizon Center by scoring eight seconds into Washington's game against the New York Islanders. Semin would later tie the game at three in the second period and then scored Washington's first goal in the shootout en route to the 5-4 win. Semin also led all...

Ovechkin: Injury quip a joke, I'll be back in a week

Alex Ovechkin says he was joking when he told a reporter over the weekend that he could be out more than a month. The Washington Capitals star practiced lightly Monday and said he would actually miss about a week. He hasn't played since leaving a Nov. 1 game against Columbus after he was hurt in a scrum. The Capitals said last week that Ovechkin, whose 14 goals and 23 points...

A Turning Point for Semyon Varlamov?

Semyon Varlamov’s struggles this season have struck me as often being of the mental as opposed to the physical variety. So consider the mental fortitude he displayed in last night’s 11-round shootout victory over the New York Islanders. Beginning with Robbie Schremp’s shootout attempt in round 3 and lasting all the way through Cap-killer Jon Sim’s in round...

Steven Hindle: Two Swedes and a Cap Conundrum

Nylander Clears Waivers As everyone knows by now, Michael Nylander officially cleared waivers a few moments ago. No one has claimed him and he is not present at Capitals practice facility. The question now becomes, what happens with Nylander? His salary shifts off the Caps cap hit, but he still earns his full amount if he plays in Hershey, but I doubt that will happen...

Why rush Ovechkin?

Kind of an odd situation developing in Washington. In an interview this past weekend, Alexander Ovechkin said he would likely miss 4 to 5 more weeks and is advised not to practice. Here is the disputed dialogue.
