NHL Referee/Official Circus

Alright so it's happened to every sports fan, your watching your favorite team and the whistle blows and a call is made that we feel is so bassackwards it's absolutely mind-blowing. Or the other scenario; there is blatant misconduct that goes uncalled and you're left wondering what the f@#*? I know some people feel this way almost every time their team plays, I mean it's all part of the game right? WRONG!

Let's take things back a little bit to the last Stanley Cup playoffs when the Anaheim Ducks walked away with the glory. Before the playoffs began the word came down from the NHL big guns assuring that officials were going to do everything they could to consistently and properly enforce the rulebook. All though accidents do happen (and they did) for the most part they upheld exactly what they promised. A blade on the body impeding progress was a hook, a player taken out of commission during a breakout to far from the puck was interference, a puck flipped out of play in the opposing teams zone was delay of game… there it was cut, dry and straight forward. So why… are these calls not consistently being called a season later… why is it not ok to "let 'em play" during the playoffs but during the season it's ok to take a lackadaisical approach to the whole gig? The last month of NHL play has absolutely made me sick, not just my own teams games but almost every game I've watched. I've seen a plain as day offside lead to goals scored, cross checking (that also could have been ruled interference) less then 10 feet from an onward looking official, pucks flipped out of play WITH NO DEFLECTION, high sticking that caused blood, goaltender interference ALL UNCALLED by onward looking officials and referees. I've watched hundreds make that thousands of minutes of hockey and seen all of this happen before but NEVER in such gross proportion and with suck negligence across the board. This is beginning to affect the integrity of the game; it's getting out of hand. I love the sport of hockey and will until the day I check out, all I'm looking for is the consistency that the NHL so diligently upholds during the playoffs and other key games. If it's a priority to uphold the rule book to a "T" during the post season then it must be during the regular season also, end of story.

Why is the NHL so afraid of Brian Burke? The refs in the series between Anaheim and Ottawa in the Stanley Cup final were a joke. Anaheim was allowed to get away with anything, and they still are. The standard of NHL refereeing is disgustingly low. It really is.

Actually Anaheim is the most penalized team in the league this year. Boo yah.

Why does a ref make a call at center ice, and the ref right next to the play not make the call. Also why is it Crosby throws punches at someone, but never sees the inside of the penalty box. Oh and the player he as punching gets a ruffing penalty. Hockey is Fixed.

The game officials in the NHL are 'game managers' NOT referees, unless one believes that a referee is hired for his ability to create more mayhem on the ice. Let's suppose that the game is honest on the ice. If that is so, then the Bateman statement during this year's playoffs that the goal of level play has been achieved can also apply to the playoffs. First, if a team is on the edge of elimination, and one observes that the TEAM check is accompanied by a low, and emphatic elbow to the midsection - on EVERY check, one must assume that if the other team doesn't retaliate, they 'get the message'. If all other checks are above the shoulders, then, even more, the team on the receiving end will get the message, because they know they can't get away with the same thing. Even the players know. The gate at a game in the playoffs, not to mention the TV revenue, would tempt any honest person to tweak the rules to 'improve the game'. Of course the game is a cheat! It is owned and run by people. The thing about the NHL, however, is that some of its rulings are played out on the ice. When a key player for Boston was hit such that he was lost for almost the entire season with a concussion, the 40-goal scorer on the offending team was also lost for the season by virtue of two 'questionable' shots to the head. Interestingly, the league required two hits to accomplish their goal of leveling the playing field in the latter case - and, parenthetically, may have cost the second player his career. No matter. The Bateman Goal has been achieved. With enough 5 on 3's in a game, any team can be brought back from the brink of disaster, and the calls don't have to be wrong. All that is required is to miss calls on the more needy team. Fixed? Absolutely. If a businessman doesn't have a plan, he is not a businessman.
