Following the departure of backup goaltender Mathieu Garon, general manager Ray Shero went out and found one of the best available free agent goaltenders, Brent Johnson. The 32 year old netminder played in 21 games last season for the Washington Capitals, going 12-6-2 with a 2.81 goals against average and a .908 save percentage before hip surgery ended his year. He has also been a member of the Saint Louis Blues and Phoenix Coyotes and started his professional career in 1997 with the AHL's Worcester IceCats.
Johnson was originally drafted by Colorado in the 5th round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He is the grandson of NHL Hall of Famer Sid Abel. It is expected that John Curry will be competing with Johnson for the backup spot, behind Marc-Andre Fleury.
