by Bruce CiskieFiled under: Blackhawks, Oilers, Western, NHL Free AgencyWe weren't far into the annual craziness of NHL free agency when the Edmonton Oilers suffered a significant loss.Goalie Dwayne Roloson was a rock for this team over his three-plus seasons in northern Alberta. After practically carrying the Oilers to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, he performed well over the new contract he signed that summer in Edmonton. The 39-year-old wanted a two-year deal when he got to free agency this year, but Edmonton didn't offer that. With Roloson gone to the Islanders, Edmonton moved very quickly to find a new starter.Oilers Sign Nikolai Khabibulin originally appeared on Fanhouse NHL Blog on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 16:20:00 EDT . Relentless Incompetence

Nikolai Khabibulin introduces himself to the media. The clip on the Oilers site includes this: Edmonton Oilers made such a big commitment. There weren’t too many opportunities with such a long term out there. It happened that the Oilers, when they made a commitment, we looked at it. For some reason, the clip of [...]

A Loser Move for a Loser Franchise

For obvious reasons, I want good things to happen to Nikolai Khabibulin. With that said, the contrast between Alberta’s two hockey franchises has rarely been sharper than it is today. While Calgary is having a press conference to announce that they’ve added yet another elite player in the prime of his career, the [...]

Krieger: Accept reality, hope for more

Frankly, I was expecting one of those Avalanche blockbuster deals. You know, like six years and $24 million for 39-year-old Dwayne Roloson or something.

Today's The Day?

The rest of the NHL is looking forward to tomorrow and free agency, but there's a chance Edmonton's news will come today. If Dwayne Roloson accepts the one-year offer from Edmonton and the Senators deal Dany Heatley before midnight (and they have 4 million reasons to do so) Oilers fans will have lots to talk about on Canada Day but little news will break.I'm not certain...
