The Pittsburgh Penguins were unable to solve the Detroit Red Wings defense and goaltender Chris Osgood as they lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Championship Series 4-0 on Saturday. The Penguins came out strong in the 1st period, but faded as they game went on and Detroit's defensive game kicked in. A poorly executed line change by the Penguins midway through the 2nd period served as the turning point and was all that the Red Wings needed to break the lock on a scoreless game. Another Detroit goal early in the 3rd period enabled the Red Wings to close the defensive noose around the neck of the Penguins. They finished it up with 2-late goals, one short-handed and one on the power play, to give them a 1-0 lead in the series.

  • Dominant performance by the Red Wings and good to see there was some octopus twirling in this one regardless of whatever Bettman wanted to accomplish by banning that.
  • chris osgood is chris too-good and the red wings might have an easy road to winning lord stanley's cup....pavel datsyuk continues to impress me with how well he goes both way (defensive forward in other words)...listed at 5'10 185 leads the red wings in hits this postseason...tell me that aint impressive
  • If Osgood had to defend as many shots as the other goalies, he would just be another regular goalie. The Penquins only got 19 shots on goal compared to 36 for the Wings. That's the way it has been in every series so far. I'd be thanking my offensive and defensive players more than Osgood.
  • GREAT! I hope the redwings sweep the pens... I hate pittsburgh!
  • I wouldn't count your chickens before they are hatched. This series is still destined to go the distance and the Penguins will battle back. There is no way that this will end in a sweep.
  • hahaha no proof at all in that first game did i see of the penguins having any life of a chance to win this series....detroit is just too good im sorry
  • I would argue that there was plenty of evidence in the first period. Detroit is a great team, but they are not unbeatable. As long as the Penguins play their game for a full 60-minutes, this will be a highly competitive series in which anything can happen.
  • Lets go red wings!!!!
  • FACE IT, YOU CANT BEAT DETROIT!!!!!!! PITTSBURGH IS A BUNCH OF LITTLE DIVING GIRLS ROLLED INTO A HOCKEY TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • PhillyFitz, we know you don't like the Penguins, but they wiped out your team cleanly in 5-games. Save your whining for next year, you will probably need it then (again).
  • the city of detroit must feel pretty good right about now cuz theyre about to have 2 parades soon enough. damn. must feel good to be born with championships basically. its a shame ive never known that feeling living in philly.
and oh yeah, pittsburgh, theyll be chanting "na na na na hey hey hey goodbye" to you REALLLL soon, lol.
  • Boy, a lot of testosterone flexing after just 1 win.....
  • I picked the Wings, but this was one game. The series is far from over.
  • I agree Bzr034....the Penguins only need to win one game in Detroit to get the Cup. This series is far from a foregone conclusion.

Penguins Blanked Again by Detroit's Stifling Defense

The Pittsburgh Penguins and their fans had another frustrating game against the Detroit Red Wings as they lost 3-0, marking a second consecutive game in which their highly potent offense was snuffed out by the exceptional defensive play of the Red Wings. The Penguins seemingly played a better game than they did in the first game, but took too many ill-timed penalties and failed...

July 1st Post Mortem

I wrote an article a few weeks ago in anticipation of the start of the NHL free agency period. I described it as the NHL's "silly season". I had no idea it would be as silly as it was. In an off-season where very few marquee free agents were available, teams paid major dollars for players who could best be described as fringe. $300 million was spent on Tuesday, with...

Was Last Night the Turning Point?

The Dallas Stars fought off elimination with a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings. It could of been a lot worse if the Stars had Wilt Chamberlain. Chris Osgood was giving up rebounds in the first period. Dallas should of at least had two goals in the first period if they could cash in on their chances...

Flyers vs. Red Wings Game thread: Defending Champs edition

Some might say Detroit stopped officially being known as “Hockeytown” a few years ago.  Various polls and surveys have been conducted since that time, and their findings show the location of this fabled land might arguably be a bit further east…  in South Philadelphia.  Our fans are knowledgeable, passionate, voracious, and relentlessly loyal.  The only thing we...

NHL: All-Star Game starters announced

The NHL announced the 2007-2008 All-Star Game starters this morning and voting was dominated by the Detroit Red Wings and the young stars of the NHL. However, unlike last year, this All-Star game will have only 1 starter who is making his first appearance - last year 6 of the 12 starters were first-t...

Mark Spizzirri: Rollin', rollin', rollin'!!!!

Perhaps my absence is a good luck charm for the Detroit Red Wings. Since my last "team" related blog following a Wings' victory vs. the Flames, Detroit has reeled off six additional victories resulting a seven game winning streak. During this period of time, Pavel Datsyuk has blown up! He curren...

Penguins Come Alive, Beat Red Wings 3-2

At last, we witnessed the level of competition that we had originally anticipated between these two great teams! After a 2-game slumber party, the Pittsburgh Penguins awoke at Mellon Arena and became the team that went 12-2 to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. After going scoreless in the first 2-games, the Penguins scored the first 2-goals of this game thanks to the tenacity...

Tuesday Night Scores

Tonight was the final game in the 3 game mini-pack that I purchased with a buddy and tonight’s game was a doozy between the Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers.  Prior to the game the Wings honoured Kirk Maltby for his 1000th game as a Red Wing (he played the game in February).  Interestingly tonight [...]

20 years and counting: the Flyers still can't win in Detroit

Don't blame Marty Biron for this one.The Flyers were seemingly in total control against the Red Wings, leading 2-0 late in the second period and cruising despite being badly outshot by the defending champs. Biron was at his best, stopping everything the Wings threw at him, and eventually made 45 saves on the night. Unfortunately, the Wings ended up with 48 shots...Click...

QUITE A HOLE WE'VE EXCAVATED

DETROIT 3PENGUINS 0No, not even the much-ballyhooed presence of Luke Ravenstahl could inspire the Pens in DetroitYou've overachieved by everyone's standards all year long. Your team is down two games to none, failing to muster even one goal in Detroit Rock City. What time is it? Time for everyone's favorite pastime, The Blame Game!Michel Therrien is blaming the refs....

The latest from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock could become the next coach of the Ottawa Senators. Avs-Wings: Goalies in Limbo

It was a sign of things to come when Dominik Hasek, the Dominator, was pulled from play in the Nashville series, and Chris Osgood was put in his place. The sign, though, was not for the Wings, but for the Avs. It was a sign of things to come. Last night, Jose Theodore, who [...]
