One of the underrated moves by Steve Tambellini this summer was the one-year deal for Denis Grebeshkov. He took a big step forward and the former GM would probably have paid in full at that time. Tambellini no doubt sees a need to offload someone this year before signing the Russian to a longer term deal at big money. It gives the organization a chance to have another year of viewing and to clear space at a less rapid pace (like they have any choice).Grebeshkov had a very good season and if he does it again he's going to get paid. The number one reasons Sheldon Souray or Lubomir Visnovsky will be traded in the next 12 months is #37. He's 25, has a wide range of skills and looks for all the world to have arrived as an NHL player. RE 09-10: Steve Staios
The saddest thing in the world for a professional athlete is staying too long at the fair. I remember Willie Mays playing centerfield for the Mets, I remember Rusty Staub on the basepaths, I remember Chris Chelios playing defense for Detroit. Lots and lots of people are suggesting Steve Staios needs to move along, he's no longer useful. Has Steve Staios stayed too long at the...
RE 09-10: Sheldon Souray
A look through the history books shows Sheldon Souray's 08-09 season was exceptional. His 12 powerplay goals were the most by an Oiler defender since Paul Coffey (he holds the Oiler record with 14) and his 23 goals overall is the highest total since Coffey's historic 48-goal season in 1985-86.That's some hallowed ground.Souray's shot from the point is as sure a thing...
RE 09-10: The Blue
The Oilers current blue is very, very good. It's the best group of 7 since the Stanley run and remember a bunch of those guys were acquired late in the 2006 season. The Oilers lack a "complete" player like Chris Pronger, but they have 4 quality defensemen who form the heart of the current team. In Sheldon Souray, Lubomir Visnovsky, Tom Gilbert and Denis Grebeshkov Edmonton...
RE 09-10: Ladislav Smid
Young defensemen develop by sundial. God, it's awful. I think you could make a strong argument that the Oilers would have won the Stanley if they'd had a veteran in the lineup instead of Matt Greene in spring 2006.They're always on the wrong side of the puck, they're always getting insight from the coach after they come to the bench after a shift, they always have...
Love those Vikings!
The Edmonton Oilers love those Swedes and increasingly are spending their valuable draft picks on Finnish kids too. For the second season in a row Edmonton invested a pick in a player from Finland, and Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson from Sweden represents the highest ever selection by the Oilers for a European player. The staple centers are still the CHL and American locations and the...
Oilers CEO to be Toasty Roasted
The Canadian Progress Club is hosting a very special event on October 5th, 2009 featuring Edmonton Oilers President and CEO Patrick LaForge. The 2009 Toasty Roast is a chance for guest roasters to take their best shots at Patrick LaForge and Eskim...
Smid Talks About The Trade That Did Not Happen
from Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun,
Ladislav Smid heard the about the trade via a 4 a.m. wakeup call.
He wasn’t happy.
Nor was he too impressed about waiting over a month to see if it would actually come to fruition.
“I thought I handled it pretty well,” said the Edmonton Oilers defenceman.

PP Scoring Amongst Juniors
Sometime in the next month or so, Rob Schremp’s time as an Edmonton Oiler is likely to come to an end. I have no particular feeling about that - while I’ve never really been a fan of the guy, I like the Oilers, so if he turned into Brett Hull, that would have been [...]
RE 09-10: Tom Gilbert
For those who believe you can't be young, unique, have personality and a lust for life while playing hockey for the Edmonton Oilers, allow me to present Mr. Tom Gilbert.Much like a rock star, there seems to be a gap between what he "is" and what he "represents." What he "is" at this point is an outstanding hockey player: Tom Gilbert might be the...
The myth of the slow start
One of the constant media lines surrounding the Oilers during 2008-09 seemed to be that they suffered from slow starts, not getting into games until they were down a goal or two. This quote, from Tom Gilbert, is pretty typical:
“Slow starts plagued us a little bit throughout the year,” defenceman Tom Gilbert said. [...]
RE 09-10: Jason Strudwick
The role of 7th defenseman in the NHL is similar to third catcher in major league baseball. The Expos had a beauty 30+ years ago named Jose Morales who set a pinch-hitting record while not catching, playing first base or the outfield.Jason Strudwick isn't going to set any records, but he is a "jack-of-all-trades" type who can play the blue, forward, fight a little and is pretty damn...
Northwest Division Center Rankings
The Northwest Division is known for its goaltending and defense. The division also has some very good forwards, especially at the center position. Shawn Horcoff has quietly become a very good NHL player for the Edmonton Oilers...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...
