Center Eric Staal was held out of practice Friday for the second straight day but his consecutive-game streak of 342 regular-season games isn't in jeopardy.
Staal has been hampered the past week or so by some lower-body muscle tightness. He had 22:22 in ice time Wednesday against the Penguins and will be in the lineup Saturday night in New Jersey against the Devils.
”This is maintenance. We’re trying to get him back to 100 percent,” Canes coach Paul Maurice said today. “Could he have practiced yesterday and today? Absolutely. And it’s not like we’re just trying to get him through the next game."
While Staal was out, defenseman Joni Pitkanen put in his second straight practice and will go with the team to New Jersey. Maurice said Pitkanen, who has missed five of the first six games, will be evaluated again at tomorrow's morning skate.
"If he wakes up tomorrow and is exactly where he is, then he's possible," Maurice said.

The Canes and Devils are scoreless after the first period at The Rock.

Forward Rupp scores first goal with Pens Wednesday
Forward Mike Rupp's first goal with the Penguins, scored Wednesday night at Carolina, was pretty - a forehand-to-backhand riser past Hurricanes G Cam Ward, and it looked a lot like something a player reputably more skilled might try.
Ward stands on his head, but the Canes lose anyway
On Saturday, the Hurricanes returned to “The Rock” for the first time since they stunned the Devils with two goals in the last 90 seconds of game 7 to steal the first round of the 2009 playoffs. The Devils in general, and Martin Brodeur specifically, had not been playing well at home, and it was a chance for the Hurricanes to get their two-week road trip off to a good start...

Bevy of Canes miss Thursday practice; news from the farm
A day after making the best save of this young season, Canes goaltender Cam Ward sat out Thursday’s practice. He was joined by Eric Staal, who has not been playing at 100%. Also missing from practice were Matt Cullen and Ray Whitney, who had two goals against the Pens in the 3-2 loss on Wednesday.
