Eric Staal says there's no more apt term than "Caniac." Driving past the RBC Center lots, seeing Hurricanes fans tailgating, see all the homemade signs, always brings a smile to his face, he says. "It's amped up, and especially for the playoffs," the Canes' center says. "Driving in, you can feel that energy and building adrenaline, which is tons of fun for us. "They really know how to do it here. They've got their signs and waving, and you can build off that type of energy. It's a lot of fun. Maybe many years from now when I'm retired as a player I can do the same thing." And once the Caniacs are in the RBC Center? "It's definitely one of the loudest buildings in the league when it's packed and rocking," Staal says. One key tonight against the Flyers, Staal adds, is using all that energy positively. But he's ready to lace 'em up and go play. "I'm amped up. I feel stro...

Philadelphia @ Carolina

At 11:27 in the first period, it appeared Eric Staal scored, but the horn was cut short when it was ruled that Hurricanes defenseman Andrew Alberts had passed with his hands. The Hurricanes showed off their new scoreboard before the game, showing a recap of last year's playoff run as fans filed into the RBC Center. No changes to the lines, but defenseman Jay Harrison is taking...

Pitkanen to miss Bruins game

BOSTON -- Joni Pitkanen went through the morning skate at TD Banknorth Garden but will be held out of tonight's game with the Bruins, Canes coach Pau Maurice said. Maurice said Pitkanen, who had knee surgery Sept. 10, should be ready for Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the RBC Center. Pitkanen had arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage.

Gleason ready to go again, if need be

BOSTON -- On Wednesday night, Tim Gleason sat down for a radio show in Raleigh and promptly said that while he doesn't mind fighting, he had been told to refrain, if at all possible. The defenseman was told he was too valuable, that the team needed him on the ice. And especially on the penalty kill. So what does Gleason do in the opener? He never hesitated in going after the...

Bruins 7, Hurricanes 2

BOSTON -- If the Boston Bruins were after revenge, they got it. They also got their first win of the season while dropping the Canes to 0-2. The Bruins rolled to a 7-2 victory at TD Garden, scoring four times on the power play. The Canes' Eric Staal took a puck in the side of the head midway the second period and was taken to the locker room for treatment. Staal was in front...

Philadelphia 2, Carolina 0

One of the hand-painted signs spotted Friday outside the RBC Center read, "The Quest for the Cup begins tonight." That may be true for the Carolina Hurricanes this season, but winning will have to wait for another day. The Philadelphia Flyers took charge of the season-opener, using power-play goals by Jeff Carter and Mike Richards in the first 47 seconds of the second...

Philadelphia 2, Carolina 0 (second period)

The Flyers score two power play goals in 22 seconds early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. First Jeff Carter put in a rebound from the side of the net, with Scotty Hartnell and Kimmo Timonen getting assists only 25 seconds into the period. Then Mike Richards scored with Simon Gagne and James Van Riemsdyk picking up assists for another power play goal 47 seconds into the...

Ice Breakers: Bruins-Hurricanes Saturday 10-3

The Carolina Hurricanes return to the scene of the crime tonight at TD Garden, as they come back to the building where Scott Walker and the ‘Canes stole a Game 7 overtime victory from the top-seeded Bruins in the second round of last season’s playoffs. After the heated seven-game series last spring, these two squads [...]

Hurricanes Downgraded to Tropical Storm

The Bruins got back on track and did what they do best (getting vengeance in the process), with a convincing 7-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, metaphorically giving them a Bill Bellichick t-shirt in return for last season’s playoff loss. With visions of evil still in their heads, the Bruins started aggressively, scoring three times to [...]

Can we restart the season?

Well, I'd like to permanently forget about this opening weekend.Canes lost 7-2 to the Bruins.I don't even know where to begin. The Canes went 1-for-10 on the power play, making their season total now 1-for-18, or a 5.6% conversion rate. The Canes also let in 4 goals on the penalty kill, making that operate at about a 54% kill rate. The Canes also let in a quick succession...

The Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes were knocked out of last season's playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup champions. They'll begin what they hope is a trip back to the postseason when they open 2009-10 at the RBC Center on Friday night.

Matt Karash: It's here!

The Canes offseason ended with a bang with the announcement of Cam Ward's new 6-year $37.8M contract signed this week. It took a little longer than I expected but I put this near the top of the list when last season ended. When we get some downtime in the slow fall schedule, I will discuss the contract in more detail, but the short version is that I think Ward is the kind of player...
