This is Bill Hicke at (I believe) the 1967 training camp for the Oakland Seals. It was a crazy TC for the Seals, with Jacques Plante hired to coach and then playing so well in scrimmages he almost made the team in front of Charlie Hodge. The Seals were star-crossed: Bill Masterton lost his life in a game against Oakland that first season, Hicke himself became very ill during the season and missed a tremendous amount of playing time, and young hotshot millionaire owner Barry Van Gerbig started losing a lot of his Standard Oil and Union Carbide dollars because no one liked the Oakland Seals. It should be mentioned that the old Western Hockey League (a pro league like the AHL, not to be confused with the junior league) flourished for decades in cities like San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles and that there were fans in the area but the Seals were so bad no one wanted to watch unless they were being paid to do so (and even then many of the veteran Seals asked for a trade during the f...

Official Training Camp Roster, 2009

Training camp rosters have all kinds of value for fans. Today's gives us clues about the team we'll be watching (young up front, and small!) in the next 9 months (or longer) and we can check off in our own minds the "sure things" and "the maybe's" along with the "yeah, right" groups. As time marches on, we can look back on these rosters and see the young men who attended camp when...

TC Comments- Team A Forwards

I spent part of today at Oilers training camp with my friend Louise; it's become a tradition, I don't know if it's mostly Oilers or mostly Louise but it has become a very worthwhile morning that signals the beginning of the Oilers season.Louise is a smart cookie (and she brought me coffee and homemade muffins--both were outstanding) and we talked about what has been a...

2009-10 Season Preview: Edmonton Oilers

Ok, now that I have your undivided attention, let’s talk some Edmonton Oilers hockey. The Oilers, as you may have noticed, have been ubiquitous in the news this summer over their failed attemts to land Dany Heatley. This PR nightmare has thankfully faded with the dog days of summer and the new coup is the [...]

Preview: Introducing the 2009-10 Edmonton Oilers!

NHL season previews often sell you an impressive bill of goods before you realize, at the end of the season, you're holding an empty box. Which makes using advertisements and infomercials the appropriate template for Puck Daddy's 2009-10 NHL Season Previews, presented each day throughout September.Last Season's Ad Copy: Eleventh in the Western Conference, fourth in the...

Quinn Quotes

Pat Quinn's media scrums are interesting and informative. We know this because when he coached the Leafs there were so many on various media outlets that when we see him now it's a surprise that names like "Sundin" and "Kaberle" have been replaced by "Hemsky" and "Souray."He's been on fire this weekend with a ton of wonderful insight...

TC Comments: Team A Blue and G

Pat Quinn didn't say much during the early session today (but he made up for it, more later) as one team couldn't score and the other couldn't stop but the breakouts looked fine and the forwards came back to help consistently. At one point they decided to try some 4-on-4 to open things up a little bit, but the flood opened for Team Blue really only during the shootout...

Edmonton Oilers Go Camping with New Coach, New System

Warm summer weather in Edmonton is one to enjoy outdoors, especially with the deep winter not that far away. Yet in a city where hockey is king, about a few hundred diehards showed up Monday to watch the Oilers open practice. The third day of Oilers training camp saw the team playing their first real scrimmage. After a summer of a lot of nothing going on, fans were happy to...

30 Teams/30 Days: Edmonton Oilers

Outlook: A few years removed from a Stanley Cup appearance, the Edmonton Oilers have done nothing much since, missing the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. Needless to say, it was time for some housecleaning for the upcoming season. The first order of business was in the management department. On May 26, the Oilers named two-time Jack Adams award winner Pat Quinn as their...

Trade Watch, Day 1

Yesterday the Edmonton Oilers signed another undersized forward, meaning they now have enough for two flag football teams.I think most fans would agree that the Oilers must make a trade in the next 90 days or suffer some historically bad shifts for the small forwards. Kevin Lowe is suggesting "three scoring lines" which is nice but a couple of slaps upside the head (read...
