I love hockey season.
Tonight the Washington Capitals, who according to the 7-2 Vegas odds, are second-most likely only to the Pittsburgh Penguins (5-2 odds) to make it to the Stanley Cup finals, take back to the ice after their crushing loss in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals last spring.More importantly, the Caps have all of Washington “rocking the red.” The ‘Skins disaster of a season and the Nats’ invisibility is the best thing that could happen to hockey in the Nation’s Capitol. And “Your Nation’s Capitals” are primed to have another terrific season – the question isn’t so much whether they’ll win the woeful Southeast Division as much as how far they’ll go in the playoffs. Hell, this time of year we even welcome our neighbors from The City That Reads up I-295, as Baltimoreans, for as much as they profess hatred for the ‘Skins and ‘Nats and all other things Washingtonian, have taken a pretty strong liking ...

Lunch with One Hundred of Our Hockey Friends
At the Capitals' media luncheon on Tuesday I was able to survey, in off-the-record fashion, 15 separate media organizations (OFB not included) to determine their respective prognostications for the Caps this season. The results:Only two media outlets predicted that the Caps wouldn't advance out of round 2 of the NHL playoffsEight outlets forecasted the Caps advancing all...
Caps Talk About Being Vegas's Darlings
The Wizards have a two-word motto for this season, with t-shirts to match: "Our Time." The Capitals, on the other hand, went with a three-word motto for this season, with t-shirts to match: "It's Our Time." That's kind of weird. Someone in D.C. likes the Goonies too much. Awaiting the Mister Irrelevant photoshop. In the meantime, as previously noted here...

catching up with al iafrate

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with one of our favorite childhood players, former Washington Capitals defenseman Al Iafrate. 'It's like Canada': DC finally embraces the Caps
Who would ever have imagined it? The Washington Capitals are the "it" team in the nation's capital.
Same faces, same goal for Caps
Members of the Washington Capitals trekked west of the District on Monday to Pev's Paintball Park in Aldie, Va., for a team-bonding exercise. Many NHL clubs do activities like this to help foster team chemistry, but the Caps probably don't need it. If there is a theme that resonates through this organization, it is stability and familiarity. Much of the front office staff...

National Hockey League Game Capsules
Alex Ovechkin got a good start to the season as he had two goals and an assist to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins in the season-opener at TD Garden. Ovechkin won his second consecutive Hart Award as the MVP last season and his 56 goals were tops in the league. He finished the 2008-09 season with 110 points and was just three behind Pittsburgh'...
They barely got started
It’s much too early to issue a wake-up call, but the Bruins definitely didn’t hear the alarm clock go off on the opening night of the season, when they showed up at the Garden ill-prepared to play 60 minutes - and ripe to be embarrassed by the Washington Capitals.
