If Parker Lucas Staal was growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, like his dad and uncles, it would be a done deal. He would play hockey. No question. But ...  "He's a North Carolinian now," Eric Staal says of his new-born son. "May be basketball. "My wife is tall. I'm tall. Who knows?" Parker may be a center like his pop, but it may be for the Tar Heels or Wolfpack or Blue Devils on the hardwood. Born Tuesday, he weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and was the first child for Eric and wife Tanya. Eric said both are doing very well. So let's say Parker does play hockey (a safe play, by the way) despite the Tobacco Road home address. Will he be a forward like his dad and uncles Jordan and Jared or a defenseman like his uncle Marc?  "He won't be a goalie," Eric says. "He's too smart for that."

Ward to start; Pitkanen still out

With just four preseason games, it appears the Canes' Cam Ward may end up playing three of them.  Coach Paul Maurice said Ward would start Friday against Atlanta and could be in net again Saturday night in Nashville. "Some of it's going to be the workload — how many shots Cam faced," Maurice said of the back-to-back. A similar decision will be made on the other regulars based...

Hurricanes 4, Thrashers 3 (preseason)

Joe Corvo's power-play goal with 11:52 to play gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead and Ray Whitney added a late score for a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers for Carolina's first preseason win. Corvo's goal came after Maxim Afingoenov's power-play goal with 13:26 left pulled the Thrashers into a 2-2 tie. Corvo scored on a 5-on-3, with assists from Ray Whitney and Eric Staal, and Erik...

Pitkanen at morning skate

Defenseman Joni Pitkanen took the ice today at the RBC Center  for the Canes' morning skate. Pitkanen, who will not play tonight against Atlanta, was in a gold jersey and is not allowed any contact work. But he was skating and stickhandling. Pitkanen underwent arthroscopic knee surgery before training camp began and has not skated with the team until today.  The lines today had...

Boychuk and Dwyer assigned to Albany

The Hurricanes trimmed their roster by another two this morning. With the team preparing for tonight's home preseason game (Atlanta Thrashers, 7 p.m., 99.9 FM The Fan), forwards Zach Boychuk and Patrick Dwyer were assigned to the Canes' American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, N.Y. With Carolina opening the regular season on Oct. 2 at home against the Philadelphia Flyers,...

Preseason update

Well, we're right in the swing of the preseason now. On Monday the Canes dropped a game to Atlanta 4-2, with Brandon Sutter and Bryan Rodney notching scores. Considering I wasn't able to listen to the game and the recap is all of four paragraphs, I'm going to assume nothing exciting happened. The goal by Rodney couldn't keep him in the big leagues, as he along with four others got...

Staal: The Next Generation

Eric Staal sat out of practice today.  Not because of some injury or illness that would have us all worried.  Nothing like that at all.  His wife Tanya gave birth to the couple’s first child—a boy—on Tuesday, and he spent the day with her and their newborn son.  Parker Lucas Staal won’t grow up with a makeshift hockey rink in the back yard.  He won’t...

Carolina Hurricanes 2009-10 Fantasy Hockey Preview

We are now less than a month away from the start of the 2009-10 NHL regular season, and I think it's a great time to start publishing my fantasy preview articles for each NHL team. When looking at a player and predicting how he will fare offensively this season, there are many things to consider: Is the player at an age where he will improve or decline? Is he playing with new line...

Sutter presents dilemma

The Hurricanes have trimmed their training camp roster to 27 players, and they will need to get it down to 22 for opening night.  Of that number, twenty are already NHL regulars.  The player who is standing head and shoulders above the rest is Brandon Sutter.  Sutter already has 50 NHL games under his belt from last season, when he made the roster not because he was ready, but...

Recap: Carolina vs. Atlanta

Eric Staal and Ray Whitney each had a goal and two assists as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Atlanta Thrashers, 4-3, at RBC Center.
