Why are the Red Wings a big “Work in Progress,” and why has their collective play dropped off so significantly after a 5-and-0 start? Going into tonight’s game against the Wild, it seems like the Wings’ players aren’t just on “different pages”—they’re on different chapters of their team’s new playbook, if they’ve read it at all, and I think I know why: after a very strong start, we’re witnessing the effects of Kris Draper, Chris Osgood and Brian Rafalski’s retirements kicking in. You can see that in the fact that players like Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader and Jiri Hudler are waiting for that kick-in-the-ass, “Start engaging physically and getting ‘em mad at you!” speeches that Draper would give both in the locker room and on the bench, Osgood’s willingness to chirp at his defensemen if they weren’t demonstrative enough, and of course Rafalski’s calmness and passing abilities haven’t been matched—instead, the Wings are over-pinching on defense, with only Ian White ha

Bye, Bye Brunnstrom?

That’s what Bob McKenzie tweeted today, as reposted by the Detroit Sports Site. The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Fabian Brunnstrom on waivers Sunday, TSN’s Bob MacKenzie reported. Any NHL team can now claim Brunnstrom — if he clears, he’s likely headed to Grand Rapids for a spell. No corresponding roster move was announced. I had to check my watch, twice, to make sure...

Mike Commodore’s accidental retweet angers Los Angeles Kings fans

Popular Detroit Red Wings defender and twitter personality Mike Commodore was very confused after a high volume of negativity from Los Angeles Kings fans on Twitter yesterday. The off-season acquisition of the Red Wings says he accidentally clicked “retweet” on an original tweet that questioned the integrity of L.A. as a hockey market. Here’s the screen grab: A screen...

Wings Need More Production From Their Top Line

from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Productivity from the top line typically is not a problem for the Detroit Red Wings because whoever plays with Pavel Datsyuk usually flourishes. But that hasn’t been the case this season. The Red Wings’ first unit has struggled, particularly Datsyuk’s linemates. Henrik Zetterberg has just one goal and one assist and Danny Cleary has no goals and two...

Cam Gore: Sharks and Wings do not disappoint at Joe Louis arena

San Jose went into Joe Louis arena in Detroit and as expected added to the list of exciting Red Wings and Sharks games. San Jose plays the Red Wings as tough as anybody in the NHL and tonight they grinded out a 4-2 win including an empty net goal. The numbers were almost even in all the departments that matter except face-offs, Detroit dominated that area. Even losing such an important cate...

Red Wings vs Wild Preview

One of the best ways to stop a losing streak is to play a team you've had great success against. For Detroit, that team would be the Minnesota Wild. Detroit has beaten the Wild 28 times in 41 meetings with only 6 regulation losses. That's domination. But the past is in the past and only today matters. Tonight's lineup:Forwards:Zetterberg - Datsyuk - ClearyFilppula - Franzen...

The Sharks Ruined a Great Thing

Tonight Detroit faces the team who’s knocked them out of the playoffs the past two years, San Jose.   The fact that Detroit’s lost to those not-so-loveable losers the past two seasons certainly irks me, but the fact that the Sharks couldn’t even do something worthwhile with the series victory makes it sting even more. Prior to losing to the Sharks, if you beat Detroit in...

Amid goal dearth, Cleary searches for rhythm

No one embodies the Red Wings' struggle to score more right now than Danny Cleary, who has two assists this season.
