The scene in The Hunt For Red October when Sean Connery and Scott Glenn are attempting to outrun the evil Russian sub helmed by Stellan Skarsgaard in one of his notable pre-Good Will Hunting roles features a line by Courtney B. Vance, sonar operator on the Red October that sums up what could be heard by the current members of the stars: "Way to go Dallas." Vance says this emphatically when the USS Dallas directs a torpedo away from Red October, but you have to imagine Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk being almost as excited with several of the moves his squad made today. Dallas finished six points out of the final playoff spot and their 89 points was good enough for 10th in the West. The Stars made a move quickly after free agency began on Sunday, July 1 by signing 41-year old Ray Whitney to a two-year, $9 million contract. They followed that up on Monday by jettisoning agitating center Steve Ott to Buffalo in a deal for veteran pivot Derek Roy. Ott's name was bandied about at ...

We now take you live to Days of Y'Orr GM Patrice Purrgeron's press conference in progress..... ...and the North East Division is changing. Brian Burke continues to refuse to change his strategy and make the Maple Leafs a playoff worthy team. The Ottawa Senators are putting all their faith in a defenseman who is on the ice for just as many points as he scores. The Montreal...
Last season, the Buffalo Sabres had no answer when Bruins forward Milan Lucic bowled over Sabres netminder Ryan Miller at the Garden on Nov. 12. The Sabres were roundly condemned throughout the hockey world for their lack of response in defense of their goalie, who was sidelined for several weeks while the team fell into a lengthy tailspin that kept them out of a playoff spot. On...
The Buffalo Sabres mission to get tougher took another step forward this evening when they acquired Adam Pardy and Steve Ott from the Dallas Stars for Derek Roy.
After opening free agency with John Scott, Darcy Regier made a major decision in parting with Derek Roy, part of the post-Drury core. Not only does Roy’s departure rid the Sabres of one of their undersized forwards...
The Buffalo Sabres have acquired forward Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy from the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Derek Roy.
Sabres general manager Darcy Regier announced the trade Monday.
Ott had 11 goals and 28 assists in 74 games with the Stars last season. The 25th overall pick in the 2000 entry draft, Ott has 85 goals and 135 assists in 566 career games.
You know how we do it here at BW.com whenever a new guy shows up. We call someone from the brotherhood of Bloguin to dish the dirt. So, we are joined by the boys over at Stars of Big D to talk about Steve Ott and some D-man. Let's get to the questions!
What kind of player are the Sabres getting in Ott?
1) Ott is about as passionate as guy as you'll find in the league...
John Scott is not the only fighter who has been signed by a Northeast Division team.
Apparently the rest of the Northeast Division is tired of being pushed around by the Boston Bruins because they have been signing fighters nonstop since free agency opened on July first. We all know the Bruins do not need help in the toughness category, but for...
First, I'd like to apologize to you readers for the egregious pun in the title courtesy of my friend Joe (@JoeSzprygada). The opportunity is simply too great to pass up. And, as I like to say, a bad pun is better than no pun at all. So... sorrynotsorry.
Anyway, as you already know, the Sabres' offseason officially got underway yesterday (with respect to the draft and John...

It was getting awfully boring.
While the world was waiting and praying for a decision from Zach Parise on yet another uneventful day in the world of NHL free agency, the Sabres and Dallas Stars decided to shake things up.
Buffalo sent oft-scrutinized center Derek Roy packing to “Big D” in exchange for gritty...
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres have acquired forward Steve Ott and defenseman Adam Pardy from the Dallas Stars in exchange for center Derek Roy. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier announced the trade Monday. Roy is entering the final year of his contract after underperforming last season for Buffalo. Following season-ending surgery to repair a torn quadriceps tendon in 2010...
from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News, My first thought after the trade was completed Monday evening wasn’t about who was leaving but who was coming. Derek Roy’s Buffalo career was finished after last season, the minute he had the audacity to mouth off about Sabres coach Lindy Ruff. Speaking against the organization in any way, shape or form is grounds for dismissal.
When a player is rumored to be on the trading block for as long as Steve Ott has, there’s only two possible outcomes – they either fizzle out like Jose Canseco’s sex life, or they come to fruition. In Ott’s case, it’s the latter. The Stars have been looking for a top six scoring forward [...]
The draft-day trade that sent Mike Ribeiro to the Washington Capitals created a huge need for the Dallas Stars to add a playmaking center to their top two forward lines. Yesterday, Joe Nieuwendyk attempted to fill that need with the acquisition of Derek Roy from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Steve Ott and Adam Pardy.
Roy is coming off a poor season for an underachieving Sabres...
Per the Dallas News’s Mike Heika:
Stars get Derek Roy from Buffalo in trade for Steve Ott and Adam Pardy. There is your top-six center to take Ribeiro’s place.
The Stars confirm:
BREAKING: The Dallas Stars have acquired center Derek Roy from Buffalo in exchange for Steve Ott and Adam Pardy. More details coming soon…
The Buffalo Sabres are Ott to trot.
I told you last week that I caught a serious whiff of Derek Roy to Dallas for Steve Ott rumours. Today, the deal came to fruition. Dallas GM, Joe Niewenedyk, needs a play maker to get the biscuit to Jamie Benn, Loui Ericksson, and the newly acquired ray Whitney.
