Chris Kunitz’s hat trick powered Pittsburgh to a 6-3 win over the Washington Capitals Sunday afternoon. Kris Letang and Matt Cooke also had a goal and an assist each in the win. Evgeni Malkin added a pair of assists. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin had an assist for just his third point in eight games. John Carlson picked up a total fluke goal when his dump-in went off the glass and handcuffed Pittsburgh goaltender Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun went behind the net, assuming the pack was going there, but the puck hit the glass just right and deflected into an empty net. The Capitals continue to #OccupyLastPlace in the Eastern Conference at 2-6-1. Only Calgary (1-3-2) has fewer points but also has three games in hand. Pittsburgh is 5-1-0 on the road in the early going. Montreal edged Ottawa 2-1 with David Desharnais’ first-period goal being the difference. Carey Price stopped 32 of 33 shots and outdueled Craig Anderson (30 saves, 32 shots against) in a goaltender battle. Max Pacioretty played for t...

Penguins' Kunitz given 4th goal in win over Caps

The NHL agrees with Chris Kunitz - he scored four goals instead of three in the Pittsburgh Penguins' win over the Washington Capitals. The league announced Monday that Kunitz has been credited with a fourth goal from Sunday's 6-3 victory. Replays appeared to show that Kunitz redirected Paul Martin's shot from the point for the game's first goal. The official scorer...

Pittsburgh Penguins History: Moe Mantha

He was involved in two of the highest profile trades in Penguins history. What’s more, he’s ranked sixth on the team’s all-time list of highest scoring defensemen. Yet many Steel City hockey fans seem to have all but forgotten Moe Mantha, who arguably was the team’s best blue-liner at the dawn of the Mario Lemieux era. The son of Moe Mantha, Sr., a minor-league defenseman...

Penguins and Europeans Blogging Thesis

From The Pensblog: It is no secret that "players and people who we think are Penguins" are North Americans.  Especially in the Dan Bylsma era, the Pens' mentality has shifted. Their top priority has been to stock the organization with aggressive skaters who aren't afraid to forecheck, throw a little hit, get separation, and get a cycle going.  It's Bylsma...

Gameday: vs. Pittsburgh, Feb. 3

Neutralizing the two best players in the world is always a tough task; Crosby had 3 points Saturday. (Clydeorama). The Washington Capitals will welcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to Verizon Center this afternoon for their traditional Super Bowl Sunday matinee game.  Pittsburgh, who won their last game against the Devils 5-1 on Saturday, are 5-3-0 for ten standings points; this...

A House Undefended

Separate and distinct from the scoreboard verdict, there was a disquieting vibe to Super Sunday’s matinee tilt between the Penguins and Capitals. I sat down low in Verizon Center for it, and I didn’t like the vibe at all. This game is a special tradition on our hockey calendar. While there are a handful of other games this day, Pittsburgh and Washington own Super Bowl Sunday...

Video: John Carlson scores thanks to a weird bounce off the glass

This might be the easiest goal John Carlson will ever score in his NHL career. Carlson dumped the puck in off the glass, hoping to get the puck in deep so his team could make a line change. Pittsburgh goaltender Tomas Vokoun left his crease, ready to play the puck behind the net only to find the puck had taken an awkward bounce off a stanchion, sending it directly at the now empty...

Penguins beat Capitals for third straight win

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a Super Bowl Sunday matinee that featured superstars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin, it was Chris Kunitz who stole the spotlight, scoring a hat trick to send the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals. Paul Martin, Matt Cooke and Kris Letang also scored for the Penguins, who are on their first three-game winning...

Penguins-Islanders Preview

While the Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the New York Islanders for the better part of five seasons, they haven't been able to keep up of late. The surging Penguins try to avenge last week's loss to the Islanders as these clubs meet again Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum. Pittsburgh (6-3-0) had compiled a 23-4-2 record against New York (4-3-1) before suffering a pair of...

Pittsburgh Penguins Gameday 9 - Washington Capitals

Pittsburgh Penguins (5-3-0) @ Washington Capitals (2-5-1) NBC, TSN2 - 12:30 pm/et Verizon Center - Washington, DC "Crosby versus Ovechkin" may no longer have the same luster as it once did, but games against the Capitals are still fun. Tomas Vokoun will start against his former team. Apparently there's some other sporting event on today too...
