Eric Wellwood, left winger for the Flyers AHL affiliate Adirondack Phantoms, suffered what can only be described as a gruesome injury on Sunday afternoon, as the 23-year-old prospect severed tendons and blood vessels just above his right ankle, the result of cutting himself with his own skate after falling into the boards during the team’s 4-1 loss to Bridgeport. The injury was so severe that the trainer didn’t even wait for a whistle to assist Wellwood off the ice, rushing out while play was going on to render aid to the Phantoms winger. According to one player on the Adirondack bench, Wellwood was bleeding so profusely that his skate was filled with blood. Oh yeah, as if that wasn’t bad enough, apparently Wellwood’s tendon “could be seen clearly in the wound.” Let that sink in for a minute. The team has said that Wellwood has undergone one surgery, and will likely have to endure another on his leg to repair any possible vascular damage. Teammate Danny Syvret tweeted out a picture of Wellwood’s bloody skate, while dropping a Curt Schilling reference… Scary incident today. Here’s a closeup shot of Wellwood’s gory, blood-drenched skate, just so you get a better idea of just how badly the left winger was bleeding… From the Post-Star… The initial assessment revealed damage to the tendons and veins, but not any arteries. Later reports indicated that Wellwood may have cut an artery in his calf, where the artery splits into three pieces to the foot. Cutting one of those three pieces is not as dangerous as a main artery, but is still rather serious. Scary stuff. Here’s hoping that Wellwood’s recovery is full and quick, and that someone gave the poor kid a cookie for unintentionally donating a pint of blood during a hockey game.
