Wilson Scores Two, Smith Earns Shutout in Win
Charlotte, NC–Goalie Jeremy Smith stopped 31 shots for his fifth shutout of the season and Kyle Wilson scored twice to lead the Milwaukee Admirals to a 4-0 win over the Charlotte Checkers Tuesday in Charlotte, NC.
Smith stopped 13 shots in the first period, ten in the second and eight in the third for his 28th win of the season.
The Admirals were outshot in the first period 13-6 but the game was scoreless until the 2:56 mark of the second when Taylor Beck put Milwaukee on the board with a power play goal. Defenseman Victor Bartley fired a slapshot from the middle of the blue line that was stopped by the left leg of Checkers goalie Mike Murphy. The rebound was tapped by Brodie Dupont to Beck on the left post. He buried it for his 14th goal of the season, third on the power play.
Just 52 seconds later Milwaukee claimed a 2-0 lead. Ryan Thang skated the puck to the top of the right Charlotte circle. He fired a slapshot that ricocheted off Murphy and then off the chest of Admirals forward Wilson into the net. The goal was Wilson’s 20th of the season.
Milwaukee, and for that matter Wilson, wasn’t done scoring in the second period. Mathieu Aubin cleared the puck off the right wing boards to the Checkers blue line where Wilson skated with possession toward the Charlotte net. Wilson focused his eyes on the slot and at the last second, fired a no-look shot over the left shoulder of Murphy for his second goal of the game and 21st of the season.
The Admirals scored again at 5:44 of the third period. Captain Scott Ford sent the puck from the right point behind Charlotte’s net. Mark Van Guilder tried a wrap-around that ended up above the crease for Ryan Flynn to put into the net. Flynn’s goal was his sixth of the year.
The game was the first of a seven-game road trip for Milwaukee.
