ZURICH — Sweden defenseman Alex Edler has been suspended for two games during the Sochi Olympics for a dangerous hit at the world championships.
The International Ice Hockey Federation says its disciplinary panel judged Edler’s hit on Canada captain Eric Staal was “reckless, dangerous and in disregard to the vulnerability of his opponent.”
Edler knocked Staal out of the quarterfinals with knee-on-knee hit in Stockholm in May. He received a major penalty and game misconduct. Edler, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks, was banned from the rest of the tournament as Sweden went on to become world champion.
The IIHF says he attended a disciplinary hearing in last week in Zurich.
Edler must sit out Sweden’s games against the Czech Republic and Switzerland next February at the Sochi Olympics.

After a very disappointing season, some were expecting the Hurricanes to be major players in the free agent in trade market but that hasn't been the case thus far. The biggest move they made was the draft day trade for Andrej Sekera and all of their signings have been low-risk, low-cost moves to help bolster the team's depth. Not that there is anything wrong with this, as...
Following the development of a goalie can be maddening to some fans because their performance always seems to vary on a year-to-year basis and you can never really predict how they'll turn out. This is why a lot of fans want their teams to avoid taking goalies early in drafts unless there's an elite prospect out there or something of that nature. For the Hurricanes, goaltender...
I took a quick look at the 2013-14 Carolina Hurricanes schedule when it came out while I was on vacation. I finally took a closer look with regard to mapping the season and hopefully winning enough games to return to the playoffs.
First a couple quick bullets on the 2013-14 schedule specifically:
