As the NHL teams scramble to shore up their rosters with big free agent acquisitions, trades, and releases of bad contracts, all to compete in a sprint to the playoffs, Alexei Kovalev doesn’t figure to make or break a team for the Stanley Cup, but is a great story nevertheless.  Kovalev appears near to signing a 1-year deal with the Florida Panthers to compete in his 19th season in the NHL (Considering one year lost to strike, and last year he played in Russia, that’s quite a long time).  He turns 40 years old next month, but currently sits in the Top 80 NHL career all time in Points, Goals, and Assists, not bad for a relative role player.  According to a tweet by Patrick Caisse (you can get out you French-to-English Dictionary but can probably get the gist) @PatrickCaisse Alex Kovalev signera un contrat aujourd’hui avec les #Panthers selon @hfialkov du Sun Sentinel. #NHL #LNH His best season was with Pittsburgh in 2000-2001 in which he scored 95 points.  But most fans will remember his energy brought to the 1993-1994 New York Rangers Stanley Cup, for which he was the sixth highest regular season points producer, but third highest in the playoffs behind legends Messier and Leetch. It’s clear Kovalev loves the game and competing, and congrats to him for one more year of getting the chance! - Dave (@lhd_on_sports)
